I *get to* go through another 2-day session of iron infusion on 9/
10,11. 6.5 hours I.V. iron the first day, 4.5 hrs. the second. The
kind of iron I take daily is with instructions to NOT have any dairy
products 2 hours on either side of it or it can cause major problems.
Jeana, please follow your nephrologist's instructions as all meds have
to be processed through the kidneys and you don't want to do more
damage than *necessary*.

BTW, my first round of IV iron was last October. The 2nd was in mid
June - this is too soon in my *opinion*. Things aren't *going* well
(pardon the pun). ;)

Anemia can also be a sign of celiac disease, which type-1 diabetics
are prone to get- 5% or so. Research is showing that in the general
population, one-in-300 probably has undiagnosed celiac disease.

The first test for it is a blood test, which is easy. Best of luck,

Hi Jeana: anemia comes along with the kidney disease. Things to add to
your diet that might have less impact on your GI tract
Add vitamin B-6 50 mg and folic acid 4 mg per day. Helps to make the
building blocks for more red blood cells. Iron can cause a couple of
things....either constipation or diarrhea, and cranky gut if you know what I
mean. Speak to your nutrition ist in you endo's office....Joan:)

Yeah, Jeana, 'tis I who suffers from anemia due to ESRD. I have been
getting EPO shots (erythropoietin = Procrit or Epogen) for 7 yrs and
take 300 mg. iron daily. I have had 2 rounds of iron infusion (2 days
each of 4 hrs each). It is kidney related. I URGE (with more emphasis
than I can type) for you to request to see a nephrologist. If you can
maintain 49% function (your last number) then more power to you. I
didn't see a neph 'til I was at 35% and I'm now -16% and will be going
to Northwestern Univ. in Chicago in Sept. or Oct. to get listed for a
transplant. My kidneys are poisoning my system. Please don't wait -
get a referral. Nephrologists specialize in the kidneys and you want
the best assistance at this point.

Thanks, I will talk to the doc. I was supposed to see her last monday and
then it was changed to Friday. I ended up seeing her partner (a guy with a
thick accent I could hardly understand him). My doc's brother was in the
hospital in a coma. Anyway, I'll check with her soon. Love, Jeana Ü

Jeana,
You need to speak with your doctors about this. If your
anemia is related to kidney damage, then taking iron
without a prescription might not be a good idea. Anemia that
is connected to renal damage is related to a hormone called
erythropoetin. You might need to be replacing that hormone.
Again, something to discuss with the medical team.
BarbaraB.

Hi all,
It seems like I remember that there is someone on this list
that suffers
from anemia. Am I remembering correctly? If so, I need your
input. I am
slightly anemic (hct is 22 and normal is 35-48) and
<!--more-->
wondering if my taking
iron will help bring me back to normal. If so, how long does
it take? The
reason I ask is that I have kidney damage and wondering if
anemia is just
part of the kidney disease I'll have to live with or will I
be able to
correct it.
