Heart surgery

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Okay, I thought Gail’s comment was interesting because it was similar to my
endo’s. Two years ago my chest pain was unbearable. I thought I was dying.
I couldn’t even make my bed without chest pain. I went to a cardiologist
without the knowledge of my endocrinologist. He admitted me right away for
a test and it showed that three of my four arteries were 90 percent closed.
I was on the verge of a heart attack. They put me on a nitro-drip and wanted
to do bypass surgery as soon as possible . I called the endo and the kidney
doc and found that their opinions were opposite of the cardio doc. They
said that once you "crack the ribs" that most people are not ever the same.
She said that the surgery doesn’t always work and so you don’t add years to
your life. I was shocked and in tears not knowing what to do. Finally, I
decided the surgery would be better than dealing with the awful chest pain.
I went ahead with it and ended up with five bypasses. Luckily, I had an
expert doc that did some new procedures (like tiny slits on my leg instead
of a long incision) and I healed much quicker than most. Maybe because of

Pump training and Minimed & 508 Software

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

With the 508, you CAN bolus while a square is running, but of course you
cannot set another square or dual wave. Just a regular bolus and it won’t
cancel it out…… Also, YES, the 508 does have software, but it’s not
available to the public, only doctors have it as of now :O)

Dr. Joe’s e-news 7/16/01 - closed loop system

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

The reason for the delay in the development in the "closed loop" system that
links a glucose sensor and insulin pump lies in the difficulty in melding the
two technologies.

has the lead at this moment, from all the gossip at the ADA convention. It is
going to be a race with several other companies, however. We may know by next
fall.

disetronic

Hi Julia,
Welcome to the group,
I’m another Distronic person, also on the H-Tron 100, but interested in the
D-Tron, you’ll haev to tell me what you think about it! I know that the
British National Health Service are putting all pregnant diabetic women who
are interested straight on the pump, because of how much easier it makes
life.
Hope you enjoy all the training and the excitement, it definitely sorted out
my high morning blood sugars!
Love
Nicola

DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Hi All,

In May I switched to a diabetes specialist (Joslin program)
endocrynologist. He recommended the pump for me and I started
pumping on June 19; I love it!!! I am using about 1/2 the insulin I
was using before, and my control, awful before, is excellent now.

He also noted that I hadn’t had a stress test in over six years and,
even though I was having no problems or symptoms, he suggested that I
get another, just as a precaution. Well…… I failed it!!! A
heart catheterization then showed that I had arteries blocked 100%,
90%, and 60%, and they did triple bypass surgery the next day (July
6). My recovery so far is going pretty well.

As diabetics, because we have diminished nerve functioning we quite

Pump training and Minimed

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Well I had my first pump training on Friday. As it turns out I get my choice of
either a MiniMed 508 or a Disetronic H-tron or D-tron. We will have training
session for each pump so I should be able to make an informed choice.

I currently have a refurbed MiniMed 507 that I am wearing, although not hooked
up, to practice with. Basically I am mimicking using a real one, setting a basal
rate, using temp basal rate adjustments when needs, boluses etc. Next week I
will go back and will test one out using saline.

I was wondering if anyone knows if the upcoming Paradigm pump from MiniMed (or
even the current 508) will have the capability to transfer data stored in the
pump to your computer? One of the biggest reasons I am leaning toward the D-tron
currently is because I will be able to upload the data from my pump to the web,
along with the data from my glucose meter and create logs, charts and reports.

recently heard from the AACE

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

For those that don’t know what the AACE is, it is the
American College of Endocrinology.
I recently wront to them and the ADA to say that from
what I am reading that they don’t have a plan in place
for recongnizing the difference in type 1 and type 2
diabetes. Based on this Medicare and some other
Insurance companies will not cover supplies if you do
not meet a certain criteria that millions of Americans
are unable to meet. I suggested that both
organizations take a look at their current policies
and consider drafting one on this issue as it could
possibly help millions of Americans.
As of yet I haven’t heard back from the ADA, but I did
get a response from the AACE. It appears that they
have recently drafted a proposal to raise the limit of

Midwest sightseeing

Monday, January 1st, 2007

>How was your trip? Did you get to do much sightseeing? Where all did you
>get to go?

Connie, it was wonderful! We flew into Columbus and drove north through
Amish country and this 1800s village to Cleveland for the Rock & Roll
Museum and Great Lakes Science Center (to keep our 15-year-old son happy
<g>).

Then we went down through cornfields to the Serpent Mound, then to all my
husband’s childhood-memory spots in Cincinnati (where he said nothing has
changed in 30 years!), the museums and Newport Aquarium and almost to
Lexington (marveling at all the small towns and cemeteries, which we just
don’t see in Phoenix), and finally met tons of distant relatives at the
reunion in northern Kentucky.
