LOTS OF QUESTIONS
I have some big questions here….
Since going on my pump two years ago, there have been alot of ups and downs, as
with anyone. One of my biggest problems is that I have gained ten pounds! I am
small at 5′2 and so it does not have alot of area to go to Ü When I was first
diagnosed Type 1 , 26 years ago, the emphasis was on protein. Now it is more on
carbs; I have been told because of damage to kidneys by high protein.
NOW, that said, has anyone hear tried a high protein diet with like EAS or
something?
I also know that consistent focused excercise has been very difficult for me the
past year with our son birth etc. He literally has me going 24/7 and at the end
of the day the LAST thing I want to do it jump on a treadmill ( Beginning of
the day too !Ü)
Would love to hear how you all excercise and what Type 1’s do to lose weight.
My hormones have fluctuated greatly this year and changes are going on even
though I am in my thirties. Any women notice this causes weight gain?
And last , but not least, has anyone done a liver detoxification program?
I feel like I have a bunch of junk sometimes in my body. I have talked to
others who swear by them, but no Diabetics.
Thank you!!!

Hi Arianna: have a lot of stuff to sort out. First, best thing to do is
talk to a Nutritionist. You want to detox, become a vegetarian…works best,
keeps the glucose well controlled, but portion control is definitely the key.
Vegetarian does not always mean low calorie, either!!
Remember too, insulin is a growth hormone…so we ""grow""" especially when
pregnant and eating. Breastfeeding is a wonderful way to lose those
pregnancy pounds, and your pumping won’t affect your milk production or your
baby.
I teach my patients to take themselves and baby for a good walk every day.
Helps both of you.
Largest meal should be at lunch time. There are vegetable sources of protein
that are nice to kidneys = beans, tofu, etc.
Discuss this with your nutritionist/CDE so that youboth know what track
you’re on……
Yes, high protein is dangerous to us when we have renal involvement. Being
on anACE inhibitor is also important….then, you have to check to make sure
it doesn’t cross into breast milk. So a fine line has to be tread….
I gave
David a web site to check out www.aace.com….check out the new
guidelines…..Joan

Arianna,
I share some of your struggles so let me share some of the things that work
for me. (not that I always follow my own advice, but when I do, I get
results LOL)
I, too, have gained weight after starting the pump. The only way, I have
found to lose it is the boring "less calories, more exercise" way. I just
started a couple months ago doing Pilates exercises. I bought the machine
from QVC shopping channel (www.qvc.com) It is less stress on the joints and
helps with my frozen shoulder. I also am trying to eat more whole grains,
veges, whole fruits (not juice) and low fat protein like soy, chicken and
fish. I also have fat free milk. The high protein diets are such a fad
right now, but everything I’ve read and seen says they aren’t
healthy–especially for diabetics with kidney problems. (which I have). I
think eating foods with a low glycemic index and high fiber help me keep
the blood sugars lower and then I lose weight easier. Maybe your doctor
could also check your thyroid. I was diagnosed hypothyroid after giving
birth to my first daughter. One of the most common times to develop
hypothyroidism is after pregnancy. I loss 10 pounds in one week after
being put on Synthroid. As far as hormones go, I have noticed that my
blood sugars are especially difficult to control two weeks before a period.
They are higher and I usually need more insulin which in turn makes me gain
weight. In the last few months, however, I may be starting perimenopause
because I haven’t had a period for four months and I’ve noticed that my
blood sugars are much more stable. Maybe due to hormone change? Not sure,
but I like it. Well, good luck to you. Love, Jeana in Alaska Ü
P.S. Oh I didn’t mention the liver detox stuff. I don’t think it is a
very healthy thing to do for a diabetic. At least it wasn’t for me. I
tried it but just felt sicker. They try to tell you that your body needs a
cleansing but actually our bodies are made to be self cleaning. You can
get that "detox" feeling by eating more raw veges and drinking water. At
least that is what works for me. Well, I look forward to seeing what others
have to say. Talk to you later. Ü

Arianna,
I can’t help much with the weight issue. Mine yo-yos and right now
with the cardiomyopathy I’m having issues with water retention. I do
agree that having your thyroid checked is a good idea. Type 1
diabetics are slightly higher risk for thyroid issues, and can react
the opposite to normal…high thryoid actually causes me to gain
weight, while low thyroid causes me to lose…its tied into insulin
and increased insulin resistance and build up due to hormone changes.
What kind of liver cleanse are you thinking about? I’m very cautious
and conservative about any kind of cleansing. As has been said, our
bodies really are self-cleansing. Some types of supplements or
gradual changes in diet can be helpful, but harsh chemicals or
drastic changes tend to be more counterproductive with diabetics (so
I’ve found!). Also those kinds of cleansings and detoxings can
intensify fatigue and create flu-like symptoms that can really cause
problems with blood sugar control! I am more comfortable with small
amounts of detoxing started with energy work, reflexology, massage,
etc. You’d be amazed how much that can help if you have a truly
qualified, experienced practioner do the work. Just be sure to drink
lots and lots of water before and after the session. (Of course
that’s a great way to trigger a self-cleanse at any time!)

One caution on the above - with my kidney dysfunction (now at 16%) I was
previously told by my nephrologist to limit my water intake (NO soda pop) to
not overstress my kidneys. So what works for one may not work for someone
else.

The protein question aside, I am convinced that the only way to loose weight is
to eat less.
End of story.
But, doing so requires double concentration on accurate carb counting. Not
easy!
No free lunch here.

Very interesting. I know a very large lady in a nursing home (a few years
now) - wheelchair bound and fed only what is provided for her since she is
incapable of doing for herself. She is not losing weight and is still very
large. hmmmmm -
Could it be that some *bodies* just don’t work the way the Masterplan
originally designed them?

I remember a similar situation some years ago; same conditions, same results.
Then it was discovered that she has a frequent visitor that was bringing in
boxes of See’s Candy on a regular basis!
