underwater pumping

Saturday, September 30th, 2006

I use a disetronic h-tron and despite the warning have continued to use the
pump with the waterproofing clip, I figure that it’s fewer than 1 person in
3,000 with the waterproofing problems and they had cracked pumps, so I’m
keepign track of the good old blood sugars and swimming, showering etc with
the pump, just be careful that the bath water isn’t too hot or it will
denature your insulin! So in a bath I leave the pump on the side (easy cos I
use a long tube 110). No problems so far!

Pump wishes

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

Hi everyone. I have a question. I have a Minimed 507c pump. My dilema is
that its not waterproof. I wish when I was investigating pumps I had bought
a waterproof model of whatever company. Now that its hot etc we spend alot
of time at the pool. I hate the waterproof "box" thing that Minimed has.
Its a pain in the butt!! You put it in this box, put some vaseline on the
seal and have to wear it on this big huge belt. ANNOYING!!! Also one time I
used it and it leaked. So I returned it. It wasnt worth it. I didnt know
if anyone is on the disetronics one or any other waterproof one. I’m so mad
at myself. I cant go to any waterparks cause I cant be off my pump ALL
DAY!!!! AARRGGHH!!!!! My warranty isnt up yet so I dont think I can switch
to another kind of pump. I’m sure my insurance company wouldnt OK it. So
now Im stuck w/a pump thats not waterproof. I HATE IT!!! Oh well I needed
to vent. Any ideas/imput would be appreciated. Chrissy

More about C-Peptide and Medicare

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

In looking further, I find that Medicare has adopted a policy that uses
c-peptide as a means for allowing or disallowing the pump in diabetics. The
paper referenced below details how and why this decision was made.

I knew that Medicare was now covering pumps, but did not know that this was the
criteria used to approve usage. Also, I understand from Minimed that they
will not pay for a 508;, only a 507C, and, they lease/rent them from Minimed.

Since I have a 507, the best that Medicare will do for me is get a 507C!
Hardly worth it.

Now, I find, that even if I go to Minimed and pay cash for a 508, Minimed cannot
legally sell it to me without first having Medicare decline coverage for me!

Talk about confusion in government…..

reply to nursing, water , detox input

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

<<Breastfeeding is a wonderful way to lose those pregnancy pounds, and your
pumping won’t affect your milk production or your
baby.>>

I agree Joan, but our son was adopted and I had some breast problems the last
few years that inhibited me from nursing. I have mixed feelings about ACE
inhibitors and am not on one right now.

As for the liver detox, my mother works in a health food store and has had good
encounters with this. She also says some are better than others and knows their
are cautions. You DO get sick for a day or more dependent on the amount of
toxins being flushed out. And you must drink alot of water.

I have never heard of water overworking your kidneys negatively, just protein.
That was a new one for me.

LOTS OF QUESTIONS

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

I have some big questions here….

Since going on my pump two years ago, there have been alot of ups and downs, as
with anyone. One of my biggest problems is that I have gained ten pounds! I am
small at 5′2 and so it does not have alot of area to go to Ü When I was first
diagnosed Type 1 , 26 years ago, the emphasis was on protein. Now it is more on
carbs; I have been told because of damage to kidneys by high protein.

NOW, that said, has anyone hear tried a high protein diet with like EAS or
something?
I also know that consistent focused excercise has been very difficult for me the
past year with our son birth etc. He literally has me going 24/7 and at the end
of the day the LAST thing I want to do it jump on a treadmill ( Beginning of
the day too !Ü)
Would love to hear how you all excercise and what Type 1’s do to lose weight.

Connie, you’d be a great Midwest Tour planner <g>. I printed out your
message to compare against my husband’s list of "must-do’s" — thanks
for the suggestions!

Glucose Monitoring

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

I recommend a look at this site; it was developed as part of the American
Association of Clinical Endocrinologists conference recently.

It is a good history of glucose testing, how it developed, and current status.

Good reading.

>6/23 at Shapiro’s Deli / anybody in the area

Darn, I’ll be arriving July 1 — it’d be such fun to meet other pumpers
in person (which I learned from meeting Chrissy)! Everyone in Phoenix
is saying "wait’ll you see the Midwest, it’s so GREEN" so we’re driving
all over the place before my husband’s family reunion…northern
Kentucky farms, Rock & Roll Museum, whatever else looks good in the
tourbooks…but <sigh> too late for Shapiro’s Deli!

"Brittle" — does anyone who was Type 1 in the 1960s remember NOT being
called that at some point?

Ken, good luck with your start! It’s wonderful how there’s
firsthand-experience help as close as your keyboard…I know anytime I
had a question for a Real Pumper (not a tech or CDE), I could ask on
