Help for hubby

This is a bit off topic but something odd is happening with my husband. He
has been having VERY low blood sugars, in the 40s, and he is NOT diabetic.
Why would this happen. He is going through swings from 200 to 39. I got
him his own blood test meter so he can keep track until he gets in to see
the doctor. I was just hoping you guys might have some ideas.

If he’s not a DMer - why is his BG 200 and how does he feel then?????

He is clammy, cold sweat, hard to keep his thoughts together, shaking. All
the usual symptoms of low blood sugar.

I would get him in to see the doctor ASAP. Ive never heard of a non diabetic
having these kinds of BGs. Chrissy

I cant believe there making him wait 2 weeks…..that is ridiculous!!!! Cant
you see another doctor? The sooner he gets in the better. I would do
whatever I could to be seen by someone. Chrissy

Catie, sounds like he may have hypoglycemia. It’s sort of the opposite of
diabetes. where the body produces too much insulin.

Nope I never thought of that, thanks we will start doing that.

    Catie,
My mil had hypoglycemia and every time she ate a high carb meal, her
pancreas would over compensate and produce too much insulin and her blood
sugar would drop very low. I’m not sure if she ever went up as high as 200,
however. After many years of this, she is now a type 2 diabetic. Maybe you
dh is heading that direction. What’s his fasting bg? If it’s over 126, he
would be diagnosed diabetic. I agree that he needs to be seen asap. Good
luck and keep us updated. Have him eat protein with every meal to slow down
the carbs. That’s the advice they give hypoglycemics. –Jeana Ü

I thought of that but how do you explain 200?

Don’t they also advise snacks of nuts and cheese as well as small meals to
keep the BG at a decent level?

That is just what I am thinking too. We will check his fasting and I have had
him STOP THE CANDY AND SUGAR EATING!!! (poor baby loved those pop tarts for
breakfast) and eating protein with his carbs. He is feeling better today and
hasn’t had any lows. I am thinking this is answering my question too. No candy
    no lows….

I am thinking that he is having some insulin resistance coupled with the
hypoglycemia. I am afraid that is just going to lead into Type 2. We can have
matching blood test meters!!! The couple that tests together stays together??

Works for me (T1) and my hubby (T2)! We were even dx’d together (almost). Him
in September, me in December in 1997.

I call that support at home. Having someone KNOW what it is like must be
wonderful. The only good thing about having diabetes I have come up with

Hi Catie: get him to the doctor PDQ - pretty damn quick. He could be
dealing with infection or something might be going on with his
    pancreas…..don’t wait….Joan:)

We can’t get an appointment for 2 weeks for his doctor so we won’t know for a

Catie: I know I logged on late, but get him to the Emergency Room….there
are such things as thyroid problems and pancreatic tumors….if he is
symptomatic and it’s recent onset, he should be checked out NO
