Research aim: Make insulin-producing cells in lab
By CHRISTINE MORRIS
Knight Ridder Newspapers

MIAMI — Doctors expect the next decade to bring a revolution in treatment
options for the 30,000 people who develop new cases of diabetes every year in
the United States.

They foresee these patients moving beyond the rigors of insulin therapy,
pancreas transplants, and even the current focus of research –
transplantation of insulin-producing islet cells.

If researchers, including a new initiative at the University of Miami,
succeed, cells that can make insulin, which converts food into energy, will be
produced in the lab from readily available stem cells, ending diabetics’ wait

just saying hi

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t posted anything in a long
time — those of you who were here last summer will remember talking me
through the entire startup process, and now it’s been 50 weeks and
everything’s great.

No questions…but I wanted to let all you ongoing (and new) post-ers
know that your messages are being read and enjoyed!

Chrissy,
I too was dx’d at 11 and had uncontrolled DM for a lot of those years. Mom
said I often had-fruity smelling breath but since she expected me to die
anyway, it was probably just a confirmation to her. But my Q to you is, what
put you in the hospital? When I was 23 and pg I was vomiting and sick *with
flu* and doctor made a house call. He did an acetone test (no ketones then)
and it turned purple so he admitted me, but we never took me to the hospital
for anything else - other than the coma at dx. What were your indications to

Help for hubby

Friday, August 11th, 2006

This is a bit off topic but something odd is happening with my husband. He
has been having VERY low blood sugars, in the 40s, and he is NOT diabetic.
Why would this happen. He is going through swings from 200 to 39. I got
him his own blood test meter so he can keep track until he gets in to see
the doctor. I was just hoping you guys might have some ideas.

Counterfeit drugs

The following may or may not affect our group, but the info may be pertinent

3 Fake Drugs Are Found in Pharmacies
By MELODY PETERSEN

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating four cases of counterfeit
prescription drugs making their way to pharmacy shelves, and, in some cases,
being given to patients.

No one is known to have been seriously injured, although some patients have
had adverse reactions. But F.D.A. officials say they are worried about the
four cases and have made the investigation a high priority.

HTML

I’m curious as to why most of the posts are arriving HTML instead of Plain
Text like they were? I didn’t change anything and the MODY post I sent came in
that way, although I copied and pasted it. It should have come through Plain
Text. I see many other posts are arriving HTML - is there a reason I’m unaware
of? (~_^)

ATTITUDE

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Well that’s super! How did you manage to get the insurance Co. to pay
without a letter of medical necessity?
You started by establishing basals and boluses from JW’s book huh? Glad to
hear it you’ve definitely got the right attitude.
Only be more persistent with the Doc’s they need wakin up from time to time.
I’m dealing with an Endo and CDE in Hamilton just now (Mc Master) and I
also located an excellent CDE in California, she’s nothing short of
terrific.
Good luck,
