Infusion set questions

Friday, July 21st, 2006

Does anyone other than MiniMed make an infusion set inserter? I am a wimp and
just can’t do the infusion set without the softserter. I was wondering why none
of the other pump makers have one of these great inventions.

New pump I think

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

I am having a lot of trouble with my disentronic h-tron plus batteries.
They are failing and then they are not easy to get, I have to go through my
mail order pump supplier to get my insurance to pay for them.

This made me look into the Animas pump. The person at Animas has taken the
ball and run with it. They contacted me, sent me information, notified my
Dr. and are helping him draft the letter to my insurance carrier to get the
OK. I was floored by all this action.

So I guess I am getting an Animas pump if the insurance Gods are nice. This
is wonderful!

Are my meds doing me in?

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006

In ‘60 when I was pg with my first child and my BGs were rising, I was also
placed on DBI, the only pill to lower BGs at that time - but for Type 2’s. The
*experiment* was to not overload me with insulin which might harm the baby.
Now, remember, this was wayyyyyyy before home BGs and we had only one shot a
day of mixed insulins. We had one BG done at the lab or doctor’s office every
month or three. I was kept on the DBI even after the birth - for the next 16
years. Then, I was having as many as 17 reactions in a week (which the dr.
questioned since I had no real way of telling - but *I* knew). I was taken off
the DBI. It was discontinued by the FDA shortly after that.

We were thrilled when Cyclamates came on the market to give us a decent
sweetener instead of the awful saccharin. I used that for 16 years and it was
taken off the market. It is legal in Canada but not the US. Saccharin is legal
in the US and not in Canada. Go figure.

Sorry about the duplicate post a few minutes ago. I’m not used to my
mom’s trackball and somehow sent twice!

starting pump & carb-counting

Monday, July 17th, 2006

This might be just me, but both processes took a lot of concentration
and learning — I tackled each one separately. (My CDE said I had to
learn carb-counting before pumping, so it wasn’t even a question of
whether to try them simultaneously or not.)

But if you’re the kind of person who (like me) gets frustrated with
yourself for the slightest mistake, it might be worth learning the two
things one at a time. By the time I started pumping, I felt like I had
mastered carb-counting…so there was one less thing to concentrate on
while learning the new skill.

For what that’s worth!

When to test

Saturday, July 15th, 2006

I am really confused. When it says to test an hour after you eat, does that
mean an hour after the start of a meal or an hour after the end of a meal?
I have had a gastric by pass and it takes me a while to finish a meal.

Before I get started on the pump….

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

I have just been approved for the MiniMed 508 Pump… I have been
taking about 20U of Humalog before meals and 20U of Humulin N before
bed, and my blood sugars are not under good control. Also, I’m just
getting started with Carb Counting.

Question to Pumpers is: Knowing what you know now, what advice would
you give to someone who is just getting started with Carb Counting
and with the Pump???

Number of Carb

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

Hi

Those of you that count Carbs - do you have a limit of how many carbs
your should have at a meal and a total for a day. I have not been
able to get this question answer. I feel it would help me if I could
determin that I can have so many carb a day to help on meal planning.
Thanks for you input.

Basal Update

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

For the past week or so I have been using the basal
formula that Jan has suggested. I think I probably added my own
twist to it but it is pretty much the same based on 50% of total
daily use. I went from my 10 prescribed basal rates down to 3
three. How many rates do you use?

After my first week using this formula I have had very few pre
meal lows as well as fewer highs. I definitely have been more
level and generally feeling better. I do still get the groggy feeling
when I take a bolus of 3.5 or more even if I need it. Maybe I
should try a square wave bolus so I’m not getting slammed by
it.

thanks for the info group.
