Number of Carb
Hi
Those of you that count Carbs - do you have a limit of how many carbs
your should have at a meal and a total for a day. I have not been
able to get this question answer. I feel it would help me if I could
determin that I can have so many carb a day to help on meal planning.

The average person consumes about 3 to 4 carb servings per
meal in a balanced meal plan. The balance is important to
obtain required nutrients. It is more important to match the
insulin to the carb servings consumed. If you need to limit
the number of serving to lose weight, the minimum would be 3
carb servings. (Starch, fruit or vegetable, and milk or
other food from the dairy food groups.)
I assume you have an insulin to carb ratio?

Barb,
I still do not have an i-c ratio. I’m using the SWAG system since I heard of
covering carbs with insulin instead of using my pump(s) as an injection
device.
Brian is so sweet giving me credit for that basal formula that was posted. I
was not the one who did - could have been David or Patrick. I can’t recall
(Hillary Syndrome).

Yes - it’s 8 carb to 1 unit of insulin at present. I have two basal
rates- from 12 a.m. to 3 it is 1.1 from 3 to 12 p.m. it is 1.6. On an
average I am using approx 60 units a day. I have no idea if this is
normal or if I am eating to much carbs.

Mary,
You shouldn’t worry about *normal* - it’s what works for YOU that you want to
strive for. If you are not gaining weight, are satisfied without hunger pangs,
and your BGs are acceptable levels - no need to tie yourself in knots over.

Mary,
If your weight is stable, and the BG is in target, then it
is NORMAL for you. If you eat fewer carbs, then you would be
using less insulin, no matter what the ratio is, but if
fewer carbs also lead to weight loss, the ratio would need
to change if you experience low BG about 2 hours after
eating.
It is good information to have when you look at your weekly
insulin totals. Keep track of that and you can use it to
adjust and fine tune your insulin needs.
My calculations come close to your 1:8, I:C ratio. 500/60 =
7.5 grams carb to 1 unit of insulin.

As far as I know you can have as many as you want. Thats whats nice about
the pump. You just bolus for the amount of carbs you eat. Thats what I do

Hi Mary: best thing is to sit down with a nutritionist and calculate your
caloric intake…..helps to learn your insulin sensitivity factor and how
much insulin brings down how many mg/dL of your glucose….Joan:)

I know you have already received some great replies to your
question. I just want to add my 2 cents worth too. Not long after I
was first dx’d, I attended a 3 day DM class that was taught by a
dietician and a CDE. The dietician used a formula to figure the
approximate carbs per day and per meal for each person. It was based
on height, weight (maintenance or weight loss), bone structure, sex,
activity level and a few other things. Mine was figured to be 60
carbs per meal with 15 carbs per snack (3x per day). I still try to
stay around 60 carbs per meal even on the pump. The 3 snacks have
been long gone — unless I have the munchies of course! If you are
interested in the formula I’ll send it to you when I get back home
from visiting family on Thursday or Friday.
