Severe reactions & Suspending

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

I guess I opened a big can of worms! :}

I would NEVER recommend suspending without some other type of
treatment (glucose tabs, juice, coke, etc), but in some situations it
can be really helpful. I don’t recommend suspending for normal hypo
reactions regardless of severity… I sometimes have severe extended
reactions, or reactions that don’t respond normally to treatment…in
those cases suspending is very helpful.

Also, please forgive me…I often ‘forget’ that my severe lows are
not the norm. For example, just last Thurs. I went out for my lunch
break & stopped to do some price checks before eating. My bg had
been in the high 200s just 1.5 hours before and I had treated it very
conservatively, so I should have been fine. I started having vision
problems and feeling like I might pass out. My thought was that my

I am a new pump user and need to order my supplies. Can you get
supplies anyother place than from minimed that would be more cost
effective? Thanks for your reply.

hypo def.

Here’s a description of hypoglycemia from another source. Thought it would be
interesting since we’ve been talking about severe hypos and shutting down the
pump.

Basal Formulas

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Ok, folks here are the basal rate formulas that I promised earlier:

1. Take your Total Daily Dosage, subtract 20%, divide by 2, then
divide by 24.
The concept is that you use less insulin on a pump, hence the 20%
subtraction.
Divide by two because you use half of the TDD for basal and half
for bolusing.
Divide by 24 because of the 24 hours in a day!!

2. The second formula is this: your weight in pounds multiplied by
0.1, then divided by 24.

Hope this helps everyone, & sorry about the delay, Mike

inside info…..

I’ve heard that with in 12-9 months, mini med will be coming out with
their own insulin. Because of the problems that can happen with
insulin and high temps, mini med came out with an insulin that can be
kept in any temp and will be good for 2 years (if this is true..
WOW!). This meens no more messing around with a syringe.

Also, I heard minimed will becoming out with a new pump in 6 months,
this pump will have a water *PROOF* (not resistent) shell. Which
means no more worries about the wet stuff!

Nothing was found

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

Well I had the angiogram yesterday and they found no narrowing at all. I did
get to watch so that was really neat. They are now thinking that the problem
may be arthritis. I am happy for anything else it might be, I was not looking
forward to having heart disease. So the search for the reason I am having daily
chest pains but at least now I know it is not life threatening.

where’s the poll?

Monday, May 8th, 2006

I clicked on the web address indicted, and it took me to the
insulinpumpuser polls…but the only open one on there was the earlier
one. Is this new one about groups at some other address?

Cloudy Insulin…..

Friday, May 5th, 2006

i am always afraid of the same thing thinking that perhaps the lubrication
mixed with the insulin might affect it when pushed back in! i usually put
some in and take the needle out to get the bubbles out and then reinsert it
to draw some more… i’m afraid to push and of it back in :O(
i think i will call MiniMed and ask them about this as I have been wondering
the same thing myself!

Tomorrow morning

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006

Howdy all I am all set to go in for the angiogram tomorrow. They answered
all my questions and I am ok with it but I do have a big question.

Why would I have narrowing of my arteries if I have NEVER had high
cholesterol? Just got my blood tests back and they are all FINE!!! I
though it was the build up that caused the narrowing, if I don’t have high
cholesterol then what is going on?

Does anyone know the details of what builds up in the arteries?
