Thanks for past help.

I just wanted to thank you people on the list. At the end of the year I posted
a message about medicare and the insulin pump. Your answers were very helpful
and I’m looking forward to being on the pump. My endocronoligist says I’m
definitely
type 1 and I meet all the other criteria. He keeps saying that I should be able
to avoid the really bad lows. Is this true? My blood sugars hit the 30’s
almost every day and I spend a lot of time wondering where I am and having
panic attacks because my blood sugars are so low. It has given me one gift that
I’m thankful for, I can understand what a lot of people are going through with
panic attacks even though I can leave the attacks with a little carbohydrate.

    Mary,

I have a lot of trouble with really bad lows too. They are very often but are
MUCH better now I am on the pump. My only problem right now is learning how to
do the carb counting and I have yet to find a good resource for this.

I don’t know how to judge what is in the food I am eating and I mostly eat out.
So I am trying to find a reference book that will give me a way to judge.

When I guess right my Blood sugars are right on the money!

Chin up I bet things get better as time goes on.

Here’s a couple of books I use, The Nutribase Complete Fast Food Nutrition
Counter and The Nutribase Complete Book of Food Counts. They give detailed
info of almost everything and I picked ‘em up at www.amazon.com at a
reasonable price. Hope they will help youse.

Hi Catie Andrews: If you are getting a lot of lows, you have to look at how
much insulin you are taking and how much complex carbs you are
eating…granted there are a lot of other factors too, your activity

where you inject your insulin…a lot of things affect absorption. Have some
sessions with your endo’s nutritionist and learn about carb counting….it
will get you on your way to getting ready for pumping!!! Joan :-)))

    Catie,

I use a small pocket book called…..Carbohydrate Addicts Gram Counter by Dr.
Ricard F. Heller and Dr. Racael F. Heller. Its very helpful and even has a
fast food catagory. On some (but very few things its vague) but its been a
lifesaver for me I either got it at Barnes and Noble or Borders. I forget
which. Its very small and fits in your purse or pocket easily. It is a
yellow book w/black and red lettering on it. Let me know if you find it. Oh
and its inexpensive. What more could you want! Even if they dont have it I
bet they could order it for you. Good luck. Chrissy

Believe me I wish I had learned that before I started pumping. It was a bit
overwhelming learning that and the pump at the same time but I survived!

That is exactly my problem, I am terrible at carb counting and that is where I
need the most education. When I visit the nutritionist I am going to have LOTS
of questions. I am hoping to find something I can carry with me to give me the
numbers or some software for my PDA to help.

    Catie,

I just searched on www.google.com using the search phrase "diabetes and
palm pilot" and it came back with more than I could go through quickly.

    Enjoy.
