Meridia?

Hi,
Just a question– Does anyone know or have experience with Meridia the
weight loss drug? I just went to the doctor and was complaining that lately
I’ve needed more insulin and it is causing weight gain. I think I am
getting more insulin resistant as I get older. Anyway, she wanted to put
me on Meridia but I’m a little nervous about it. Any thoughts? By the way
I did talk to my doc about my kidneys and she says she normally starts
dialysis around 14% function and I have a ways to go before then and to just
eat healthy and watch my blood pressure and blood sugars. A new study says
that beta blockers also help kidney function so we’re increasing the
atenonol I’m on and I’m maxed out on the ACE inhibitor. She was very
encouraging. ~~ Jeana Ü

Hi Jeana: it’s not so much a weight loss drug, but the way it works on our
body and absorption of nutrients. go to medscape.com and research the drug
through medline. Also check out metformin (glucophage). Most of these drugs
are excreted thru the kidneys so have to keep that in mind….Joan:))

Thanks Joan. The more I investigate this, the more unsure I am. It says it
can raise blood pressure which I definitely don’t need. It says it controls
appetite. I don’t have an appetite as is. Frankly, I don’t even eat that
much in a day and that just maintains my weight. I think I’ll try
increasing the exercise for the next week or two before trying the drug. I
just don’t have a good feeling about it yet. Thanks for sending me to
medscape. I just registered and it looks like a very helpful site. –Jeana

Jeana: I forgot are you type 1 or 2??
If type 2, you may have developed insulin resistance….glucophage may be
helpful in small doses to help stop it…..I have the same problem and just
    started on it.
As long as liver and renal function are reasonable, talk to your endo. There
are risks in any medication we take, but we weigh benefits against
    disadvantages….hope that helps….other source is diabeteswell.com
You can write directly to Dr. Joe via that site, he will answer and may be
able to give you better or more up to date info.
Our age is another factor….if you are perimenopausal, that will affect your
insulin sensitivity too. We need estrogen, whether by HRT or via use of
phytoestrogens from soy products….it’s important in reducing the risk of
osteoporosis and pathological fractures…..back to homework….doing
Pathobiology this semester…..certainly helps us, doesn’t it :))) Joan :))))

I am type 1 since age 8 (I’m now 41). Type 2 does run in my family however.
I ask my doc today if it is possible to be Type 1 and then over the years
develop some of the Type 2 symptoms like insulin resistance. She said yes.
I told her my sister was just put on Glucophage and she said that she
couldn’t put me on it and then suggested the Merida or Xenical (sp?). I
told her I would try the Merida so got the Rx but after researching it and
thinking about it, I am hesitant to go and fill the Rx. I agree that my
hormones might be part of the problem because my BG is harder to control for
about two weeks every month. Do you know if the soy pills help? –Jeana Ü

    Jeana:
The soy may help, but I would suggest you research it first so that you
    understand alll….
cdc.gov then go thru to nih which will link to the academy for alternative
medicine….(yes, the NIH actually has a division on alternative therapies
now). May take a little bit to explore, but you can find some interesting
    stuff.
Also vegetariantimes.com for other info on alterantive therapies. Have to
use good judgement and understand that most stuff is metabolized thru the
liver and excreted thru kidneys and feces…..gotta hit the sack…just
finished my pharmacology final…..nite, Joan :)))

Jeana: Be CAREFUL - whoops touchpad again…eventually I’ll get the
    proximity stuff fixed.
Xenical will cause the worst diarrhea you never want to know, so doooooooo
research everything and always start out with half the dose to start and
gradually work your way through…less nastiness on the tummy….Joan:)))))

All I know is what Ive heard on TV. I thought if you were on an ACE
Inhibitor you couldt take it, but I might be confusing it w/something else.
I guess I dont know much about this … LOL Chrissy
