NEW!

Sunday, December 25th, 2005

Hi,
I’m a new member and so far, from what I’ve seen. I’m probably one of
the yongest(I’m a 15/m). I do not have a pump, but I will be getting
one some time this year. I was wondering if any one could email me
and tell me from their personal experiances how the pump helps you,
and how the pump has changed your lie for the better. Thank you.

Endo Visit

Saturday, December 24th, 2005

I had my second visit with my new endo today. On my last visit we had
talked about the pump and I got the feeling he wasn’t interested in that
treatment option yet. I went ahead and sent insurance info to MiniMed
just so I could be ready when the time came. At our appointment today
he asked when I was getting the pump. He had received the letters from
MiniMed and signed them already. I was quite surprised. We just have
to get some more required paperwork from my previous endo to satisfy the
insurance company and I’ll be on my way to pumping soon hopefully! Of
course IF the insurance company agrees that I need it. Julie from
MiniMed seems to think it shouldn’t be a problem.

Now I’m just waiting to get my hands on a copy of Pumping Insulin 3rd
edition. My local library system only had the 2nd edition so I
requested they purchase the latest. They have it on order and I should
have it soon. Hopefully it will coincide with getting my pump.

new to list/ques about teens

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

Hi,

My name is Chris Scarborough and I have a 15 year old son who has
been on the Minimed pump for about 2 years. It has been really good
for him, his bg control, and for the whole family- the pump has been
a real blessing to all of us.

Here’s my question- Although about 80% of the time his bg control is
excellent, every now and then he has a difficult peroid of about 2-3
weeks.

For example when things are going well he is usually 100-135 at
bedtime. But during the "difficult" periods he seems to be either
high (200-250) or lowish (60-90) at bedtime. And we can’t seem to
get back on track with adjustment of basals.

Survey question

Just curious:

How many of you use the case for your pump. I always used mine and lately
have stopped. Its not as bulky w/o it. What is the purpose of it? Is it
for protection from dust etc? Mine still gets very dusty since I live in the
desert. Take care! Chrissy

Wow, Joan, that’s a cool site! I didn’t realize non-professionals could
sign up for free, but they let me right on…and boy, do they have an
incredible search engine. I bookmarked a bunch of stuff — looks like
you can find everything you’d need to be an expert in ANY health field
(except the hands-on experience, and I wouldn’t be surprised if even
THAT’s in there somewhere <g>). Thanks!

Meridia Update

Friday, December 16th, 2005

Well, after researching this drug, I decided I didn’t want it. I found out
that it was around $400.00 for 100 pills. Way beyond my budget since my
insurance doesn’t cover it. For that kind of money I’d be better off taking
a trip to Hawaii to lose weight by walking along the beach LOL!! Guess I’ll
just have to try the old fashion way of exercise and eating right!! –Jeana

perimenopause

Thursday, December 15th, 2005

>if you are perimenopausal, that will affect your insulin sensitivity

Wow, maybe THAT explains all those recent highs! I just tried a
"perimenopause" search on diabeteswell.com and couldn’t find anything,
but does anybody know of a place to read more?

Blue Cross Blue Shield of FL

I am changing jobs, and my new employer uses BCBS of FL. Anyone wanna clue
me in on what hassles to expect?
I know about the www.diabetes.org/advocacy/improving.asp site, and I also
know what Florida Law says they have to cover. I was asking if anyone could
clue me on on what hassles and
hoops I will have to jump through with BCBS of FL. Each insurance company
has their own rules and limits. Currently, my insurance has a 500 dollar
cap on Durable Medical Equipment. THAT is horrible. I would like to know
if I have limits, or if I can order directly from MM oranother supplier, or
if I have to use the Insurance’s providers, etc. Any Advise is appreciated. :)

Traveling to Germany

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

Hello,  I don’t write much to the list, but read a lot of the emails.  I am
17 yrs old and have had diabetes for 10 yrs, I have been on an insulin pump
for 2 yrs.  I was accepted into the German exchange program, which means I
will be going to Germany with my school in June for 3 weeks.  I am very
excited but have a few questions on traveling:

~I know that I will have to bring a lot of supplies, and that its good to
overpack.  Has any who has traveled before have any problems with taking
supplies with them?

~In March we will be having the German exchange student come here for a
visit,  I will be staying with one of these students in June, when I go
there.  My teacher who doesn’t really understand diabetes wants me to tell
this student about having diabetes.  What should I tell her withoput having
her get scared about me staying with her in Germany?

Meridia?

Friday, December 9th, 2005

Hi,
Just a question– Does anyone know or have experience with Meridia the
weight loss drug? I just went to the doctor and was complaining that lately
I’ve needed more insulin and it is causing weight gain. I think I am
getting more insulin resistant as I get older. Anyway, she wanted to put
me on Meridia but I’m a little nervous about it. Any thoughts? By the way
I did talk to my doc about my kidneys and she says she normally starts
dialysis around 14% function and I have a ways to go before then and to just
eat healthy and watch my blood pressure and blood sugars. A new study says
that beta blockers also help kidney function so we’re increasing the
atenonol I’m on and I’m maxed out on the ACE inhibitor. She was very
encouraging. ~~ Jeana Ü
