<< I recently bought the cable for my Profile meter, made by the Lifescan

Do you know if the Sure Step has that capability? How much was the cable if
you dont mind me asking. Chrissy

I agree, John, I find it very helpful.

I confirmed today that Lifescan has the cable for the FastTake available from
Drugstore.com, and the software is available free after purchasing the cable.

According to Lifescan Rep, the FastTake is only calibrated for Plasma blood, and
the conversion to Whole blood must be done manually. All the other meters
(One Touch Basic, Profile, Sure Step) are calibrated for whole blood.

    The conversion factor is

    Plasma Blood = 1.12 x Whole Blood

I have checked this with about 20 readings taken with the One Touch Profile and
the FastTake and found very close agreement with one exception.

    Hi David,
Your Lifescan Rep told you wrong. I have the Surestep and it is calibrated
for Plasma. I just got the meter and thats what it says in the users manual.
I also contacted the company via the 800 number and they said the same
    thing. Chrissy

David, the choices are in the software not the meter. You can select
whichever you want and the software does the conversion.

I may have heard the answer wrong; I was looking to see in any of the meters had
the ability to change the calibration factor in the setup menu.

Apparently not. Someone reported on this list recently that you could change
the calibration, but I can’t confirm this.

    Ah, Ha!

Thank you; I will wait for the software!

Yea, ya can David, I just check my meter

Oh I think I may have misunderstood. My Lifescan Sure Step does plasma
readings. I dont think you can change it over to anything else tho. Chrissy

I thought this original exchange/thread was converting for mmol to ml/dl - No?

And the labs are Plasma; hence the shift for the new meters to do the same.

All home meters test whole blood glucose by either colorimetry or by
conductivity (unless you spin down your sample before applying it to the
test strip). Some meters adjust the reading to approximate a plasma reading
by applying a conversion factor. Serum (plasma) glucose can be approximated
    by multiplying a blood glucose reading by 1.18 (for mg/dL - I don’t know
what the factor is for mmol - probably the same).
