As I have said before, it is becoming clearer that
low glucose after meals is important to achieve good
HbA1c values. The glucose need only be under 150
half the time to have a value of 7.0. Does this keep
you from harm?

Diabetes Care 2000; 23:1830-4 carried some research
showing that not only glucose control was improved
by correcting the glucose after meals, the risk of
hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) was
diminished as well.

The lining of the carotid arteries (large arteries in the
neck) was measured by ultrasound. These values
were compared to group A with HbA1c and fasting

glucose and with group B’s glucose levels after meals.

It was more important to control the glucose spikes
after a meal than it was to have a good HbA1c if you
want to avoid atherosclerosis. The lining of the carotid
artery had more cholesterol build up if the glucose was
high after meals. Since as high as 88% of people who
have diabetes die of atherosclerosis, you better check
to see where you are after meals.
