BOY, this is a great loop! It’s so encouraging to know that (1) there’s
information available from people who have BEEN there (2) it’s okay to
feel discouraged (3) there’s a bunch of us in the same boat.

Thanks, everybody!

joint problems?

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Is my doctor making this up, or has anyone else heard that "people
who’ve had diabetes for a long time can develop inflamed joints in the
shoulder" ?

I definitely have the inflamed joints, but it seems weird to blame it on
the diabetes rather than just, say, a heavy shoulder-purse or not
relaxing my shoulder muscles often enough.

So I wondered if this rheumatologist was just trying to sound
knowledgeable, or if there’s really some truth to that statement.

Anybody?

a little down

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Hi everyone!!
I hope your holidays are going great. I am doing pretty good except for the
news I had at my doctor’s office today. It’s got me a little down and I was
hoping for a little info from the list. Why is it that a few numbers from a
test can change your attitude. I thought I was doing pretty good until I got
my test results. I had a 24 hour urine test for protein and creatine
clearance done and here are the results: serum creatine 1.6 ; total protein
1220 and creatine clearance 49. Every value is worse than the last time
tested. I should be used to it by now because I have battled the kidney
stuff for many years. I have had worse tests (serum up to 3.3 and protein
up to 14,000) too except for the cr. clearance. This is the lowest I’ve
ever been on that test. I usually tested around 70. Anyone been down this
road? What can I expect? What would help? I would appreciate any info.
My doc has me on the maximum dosage of the ACE inhibitor so not much to do
there. She didn’t seem too concerned and yet I think she just thinks I know

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

Hi everyone!
Hey how are all the fellow pumpers out there???
Hey I got a question does any one have any problems when the time change happens
and changing the time on the pump which is kinda like changing the basals.. I
don’t know why but I have been high a lot more then normal. Or maybe I just need
higher basals for winter time…
I am going to see my doctors the 14th so I guess I will see what the doctors
say!

One Month and Still Pumping

Friday, July 22nd, 2005

Well, I’ve been pumping for just over a month now. So far, all is
going well with my BG readings. I’ve posted my 30, 14, and 7-day
history below. You can see how well I’ve been tweaking my insulin
rates/ratios over the past two weeks. All this has been done without
a single hypoglycemic episode. I used to feel low about three times
per week with MDI. I also had a 24-hour illness with vomiting and
diarrhea that didn’t get me off track…I wasn’t injecting insulin to
cover carbs that I either lost or wasn’t replenishing.

slow lately

Tuesday, July 19th, 2005

It HAS been slow…which I guess is good in that it means nobody is
facing a crisis!

I just sent off a romance-novel proposal and am dragging my feet about
starting the next one, figuring maybe I’ll take it easy until after the
holidays.

And speaking of holidays, it was such a kick feeling like a Careful
Planner by loading extra insulin into my syringe for the
day-before-Thanksgiving site change.

Laurie, planning to do that again for Christmas <g>

My Disetronic H-Tron Plus V100 is just what the D

Sunday, July 17th, 2005

Hi Everyone!

I have been reading the digest of messages with great interest each
day. I have now been on my pump for 3 full months and have been able
to control my highs and lows with much satisfaction.

One thing that took a bit of getting used to was changing the insulin
cartridge and then dealing with about 6 to 8 hours of high blood sugar
immediately after the change.

As it turns out, I wasn’t keeping the pump on a flat surface standing
upright, and I wasn’t holding the tubing straight up as I was priming.
I learned that the piston rod needs to be properly positioned by
"priming" until all the air is out of the tubing, and insulin is
consistently coming out as a drip.

Bread Dough Danger…Important

Saturday, July 16th, 2005

ATTENTION PET OWNERS–BREAD DOUGH A NO-NO
As the holidays descend upon us, there’ll be many cooks in the
kitchen–but don’t spoil your pet by giving him bread dough. According to
Jill A. Richardson, DVM, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC),
when bread dough is ingested, an animal’s body heat causes the dough to rise
in the stomach. As alcohol is produced during the rising process, the dough
expands. Pet’s who’ve eaten bread dough may experience abdominal pain,
bloat, vomiting, disorientation and depression.

"We once had a case in which a Labrador retriever ate several rolls that the
owner had placed on the oven to rise. The owner didn’t think much of this,
and was just upset that the dog ate part of the holiday feast," Richardson
recalls. "A few hours later, the owner noticed the dog looked very
lethargic. He was resistant to move, incoordinated and was retching." As the
symptoms increased, the owner brought him to an emergency clinic, which

First night

Monday, July 11th, 2005

I have been on the pump for one day. Did not sleep that much last night. I am
afraid I am going to break the pump or I am going to become detached. I know
it sounds stupid.

No it is far from, stupid, We all go through the same feelings in the beginning
of pumping. Just give yourself a little time.
