This makes sense!

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

I got the result of my HB1 (is that what it is called? I get confused
on the name of that test of your blood sugar levels over 3
months…lol) Anyway, it was 6.0, which the doctor said was excellant
control. Well, the thing is-I’m NOT in excellant control-my diabetes
is very brittle and my levels go very high and then very low several
times a day. I had another doctor one time that realized that
my "great" readings were not really that great, they were actually an
AVERAGE of all the highs and lows put together, making it look like a
good reading! If that is true, then it seems to me that these tests
aren’t really conclusive as to how your blood sugar readings really
are running! My doctor (he’s a new doctor btw) didn’t bother to
check my daily readings by reading them from my meter, he just went
by the blood tests, which was an average of a lot of highs and a lot
of lows. Sort of a waste of bloodwork, huh? What do ya’ll think?

Start Pumping!

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

I just thought I’d let you all know that my MiniMed 508 pump has been delivered
and I start my training and pumping on Friday morning!

What’s more amazing is that my insurance paperwork, once filed, went through in
a day!

I appreciate everyone’s support and guidance while I was decided. I can’t wait
to start pumping.

Yippie!

Had a 5.7 HA1C tonight, best ever….I can afford to be a bit compulsive about
this test, since I am the guy who runs them….been checking monthly since pump
therapy initiated.

colds, viruses, etc

Friday, May 27th, 2005

Since the flu and cold season is starting, I just wanted to know something.
Do you, my fellow diabetics, get colds and viruses easily? I seem to be
able to resist them or get over them fairly quickly. I’ve often wondered if
my over achieving immune system that attacked my pancreas also attacks
viruses fairly effectively. Right now I have two kids sick and I had the
beginnings of a sore throat and headache and then it went away. When I do
get sick, I seem to be able to "will" the germs away. Maybe it’s just
motherhood. You know, moms can’t be sick if the kids are. LOL Once in a
great while (like several years) I do get pretty sick, but most of the
time, I escape the flu and cold season. Is that typical? Just
urious. –Jeana in AK Ü

Planter’s Warts

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

I saw my endocrinologist today and he confirmed my
suspicion that I have a small planter’s wart starting
on one foot.
He said to keep an eye on it, but they often just go
away on their own.
I thought they just grew larger and deeper and
spread more warts on the foot.
Does anybody know if they sometimes just go away?
What is the preferred treatment for a 43 year old
man with a 23 year history of insulin dependant
diabetes? When I was a teen I had some burned out and
some frozen out. My nephew with diabetes had some
filed off - my sister thought he was going to lose his
foot.
Also how does one prevent a recurrence?

Dr. Joe’s neuropathy explanation

Thursday, May 26th, 2005

Peripheral neuropathy is what most people think of
when thinking of diabetic neuropathy. Numbness or
pain in the legs is their idea of what is wrong. The
legs have the longest nerves in the body and
therefore seem to be prone to poor metabolic
control of the very small blood vessels around the
nerves. Elevated blood glucose itself delays nerve
conduction and eventually causes damage, not just
impairment. Early detection allows early treatment
and possible reversal of the problem.

Peripheral neuropathy testing has been easily done
with nylon elements of varying sizes. More recently,
electronic testing has yielded more reproducible
results.

This week’s MMWR Vol. 49 / No. 42

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

This week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) is mostly about
diabetes. I haven’t read it yet, so I pass along the links with no comment.
MMWR is available online at no charge in either html (for reading on screen)
or pdf (for download) formats.

neuropathy?

Sunday, May 8th, 2005

Joan’s answer here reminded me of a question I have had for awhile. I have
heard about not taking NSAIDS so what do you take when aspirin and tylenol
aren’t working? I do take an aspirin a day for my heart disease, but I also
have pretty painful neuropathy in my hands, feet and legs below the knee.
Some days it doesn’t bother me, but other days I just feel better if I’m on
a pain pill. Right now I occasionally take Ultram (Is that a NSAID?). Not
sure if it is good or not. Is there anyone on the list who has found a way
to deal with neuropathy? I am open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance.
Btw, Joan, I really enjoyed reading your answer about kidney problems. I
have struggled with kidney problems for a long time. Your answer was very
informative. Love, Jeana in Alaska Ü
