Placing things in perspective
A man I know has been in denial about diabetes for many years. He visits his
doctor once a year and makes up BG numbers for the year so his insulin will
continue to be covered by insurance.
Two years ago he nearly lost a foot. His behavior continued.
Two weeks ago he had a low BG seizure - his girlfriend didn’t know what was
happening because neither he nor she had educated her about diabetes. She
called
911 and received a quick education. His doctor read him the riot act.
Yesterday she returned from a dog show out of town that most of us terrier
people
attend each year. He was not at the airport to pick her up. She rented a car
and drove home. The dogs were outside. He was in the house - dead. What a
waste of life. His stubborn refusal to accept and manage his disease results in
a pointless and needless death.
Cheers to all of us with sore fingers from checking, who tire of weighing food
and checking carb charts, who get up an exercise when we’d rather read a book,
who have courage to tell those we know and with whom we live what they should do
in a crisis. Cheers to all of us who accept and manage. I know he brought on
his own death, but he was a nice, nice man in his early 50s and it makes me so
sad that he killed himself with ignorance and stubbornness.
