<< << 'Did you know that over fifty percent of the people killed in auto
accidents ate carrots within 24 hours of the accident?' >>
>>

That's sort of surprising. I didn't know that many people liked carrots!

I don't use the stuff, so I really am not that interested, except from an
academic perspective. But, much of this stuff reminds me of the old saw,

> Does this mean I can get drunk on hot diet coke? :-)

No, just pickled.

The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of
my wife who runs this house and makes more important decisions than I do.

Also, Here is what I found on The ADA's site:

Another view from American Diabetes Organization:

Aspartame Question:
Perhaps you've heard about the Internet "report" from an "environmental
conference" on the subject of aspartame. The report is attributed to "Nancy
Markle," who claims that aspartame can cause symptoms that resemble multiple
sclerosis and that, when heated, aspartame turns into wood alcohol in the
body.

I drink a lot of diet Dr. Pepper and use Equal every morning on my cereal.
I'd like to know if there is a danger in using these products.

-W.H.
<!--more-->
Rapid City, S.D.

Mindy Andrus, RD, LDN, CDE responds: The accusations against aspartame in
that Internet article are not backed up by any clinical, scientific studies.
Your body handles aspartame the same way it treats other foods such as
bananas, milk, or hamburgers.

Only one small segment of the population should avoid aspartame: people with
phenylketonuria, or PKU. All babies are tested for PKU at birth. People with
PKU must control the amount of phenylalanine they eat. (Phenylalanine is a
key ingredient of aspartame.)

Aspartame is made up of two amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks
of protein. One of the end products of aspartame breakdown is methanol, and
it is identical to the methanol we eat in much larger amounts in fruits,
vegetables, and their juices. The amount of methanol you'd get from drinking
a 12-ounce can of soda sweetened with aspartame is less than what you'd get
from an 8-ounce glass of grape juice.

Heating aspartame results in a loss of sweetness, but it does not produce
harmful chemicals.

This is true whether the breakdown of the aspartame happens in our bodies or
as food products are heated.

Since it was discovered in 1965, aspartame has been thoroughly reviewed by
regulatory agencies around the world, as well as leading scientific
organizations.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the National Cancer Institute, the
American Dietetic Association, and the American Diabetes Association (see
pp. 6465) have all stated that the use of aspartame is safe.

Scientific evidence supports the fact that eating foods sweetened with
aspartame is no different than eating any other food. This evidence is based
on studies of aspartame in a wide variety of people (often using extremely
large amounts of aspartame). Last fall, the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology reported the results of the most recent study. As with studies
before, this one found that even large daily doses of aspartame had no
adverse effect on the test subjects.

This aspartame scare shows how important it is to do a little checking
before you believe things you read on the Internet. Anyone can post
information on-line, and it is up to each of us as consumers to make sure
the information we read and use is reliable.

Hope this helps.
Love,
Jeana in AK Ü

Oh, PLEASE, not this tripe again. Betty Martini has to be the most
discredited person on every diabetes list I've seen.

Contrary to what Betty will tell you, there is *NO*, repeat *NO* evidence
that aspartame is detrimental to one's health *UNLESS* one has PKU, and
people with PKU have lots bigger problems than just artificial sweeteners.

Somewhere in my folders I have some excellent posts on how to tell good
research from scams like Betty Martini's.

The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of
my wife who runs this house and makes more important decisions than I do.
