Keeping records

This is my first week on the pump and to keep records of meds, carbs,
and blood sugars, etc. I’ve been using copies of a form given to me
by the CDE. It’s a standard-size sheet of paper and not real
convenient to carry around. I sure would welcome some suggestions to
make record keeping easier. Do you use notebooks or are logbooks
written for use with pumps available? Are there any computer
programs I could use to keep records? Will I always need to write
down every detail–or just in these first few weeks? I’m so glad to
finally be getting started. I wish I had done this years ago.
Thanks. Linda

The graph that a lot of CDE’s used is copied right out of the back of the
insulin pumpers book. For a few weeks, it is just inconvienient….After I
got my 508, Roche sent me one of their Accucheck Complete meters, though a
bit bulky it does a good record keeping job. Memory for 1000 BG’s, graphing,
trends, and an interface (cable &software cost about $30) that makes
printing a breeze. That way I can fax my stuff to my endo, who is 70 miles
    away.

Keeping records is important for the first few weeks, but after you get
experience, you can forgo this hassle.

I used to keep detailed records (had a computer program, now long gone, have no
idea what it was), but gradually moved to instinct.

Now I do the whole carb counting process instinctively, and always check 2 hours
after any meal to see if I did it right. Sometimes I don’t, but I really don’t
worry too much if I don’t unless it gets seriously out of whack. Take it
seriously, but don’t become obsessed with the process.

I think the record keeping is very important so that you use the information as
part of the feedback/learning process. Then you can gradually forget it
(assuming things are working OK for you).

The only drawback I can see of not keeping records is, Gail Darling has been
pumping 19 years and just got a new MM 508. Her insurance co. insisted on 6
mos. worth of records to okay it. My, what they won’t do to disuade us!

Sometimes you have to give them what they want but it is okay to fib a
    little. =)
