Please join us on Ellen’s Cruise for a Cure to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes
Foundation. This is a Highlander (tv series) event. All the proceeds from
the auction, raffles and a portion of every berth sold will go directly to
the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.
We depart Port Canaveral, Florida on November 30, 2000 and return to same on
December 3, 2000. We’ll be making stops in Nassau and CoCo Cay (a private
island). Our Royal Caribbean cruise ship is the Sovereign of the Sea.
Our celebrities thus far include: F. Braun McAsh–world reknown swordmaster
who will be teaching knife/stage combat classes and answering all your
questions about techniques, knives, swords…; Marcus Testory–Caspian, one
of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, will also be entertaining us singing

For me, the fun part (and of course there are bad parts as well) is the
blissful "checking out" from everyday control. It’s kind of the same
feeling I imagine people get at a spa, where there’s absolutely no
responsibility and all you have to do is drift in la-la land.
The bad ones ARE scary, and even the regular ones get exhausting when
they happen too often…but I wouldn’t mind one of those nice blissful
mild ones say, once a month. Maybe because it’s the only way I ever let
myself relax without feeling guilty!

I have some observations at the end of this post from a mom:
<<Tonight is one of those nights when I really fantasize about a CURE!! Just
cure this damned disease!! What a stress this is on our family! Sometimes it
seems like our whole lives center around Kristina and Kxx is under A LOT of
pressure! no… our lives center around DIABETES!!! and I hate it!! I hate
what it does to all of us… the guilt that I feel, the pressure on Kxx, the
feelings the other kids have of jealousy toward the attention (good or bad)
that Kxx gets because of this awful disease! I HATE having to go to the
doctor and 3 of the others wind up in big trouble cause they couldn’t sit
still long enough or behave long enough for me to talk to the doctor! If we
hadn’t had to be there in the first place, the youngest 3 wouldn’t have been
in trouble or even been expected to sit so still or be so quiet for
something so important! uuuggghhh!! Somebody please find some islets that
are safe for kids!! Oh man!! >>
1) More than likely Kxx hates the attention

Jan, I’ve wondered the same thing (about myself, not you <g>) and the
only explanation I can come up with is that my guardian angel works a
lot of overtime.
I was telling my CDE that I hope now the angel won’t think, "fine,
Laurie wants to handle things herself; I DESERVE to retire!" but I do
feel like there’s an element of risk involved in taking more
responsibiity by pumping. Superstitious, maybe…
The other thing I’ve discovered (in only two weeks) is that I kind of
MISS having reactions. My husband, who used to do drugs in the Sixties,
said hypoglycemia seemed to create the same "purging of perception" as a

This quote from Jan’s article on depression fascinated me! And confirmed
what I’ve always believed — that control doesn’t necessarily have a
whole lot to do with complications.
Which is comforting…I like the idea that if/when I develop ‘em, it
won’t be because I ate birthday cake. Last year a diabetic friend (we
were romance-writing buddies before discovering we were both T-1s) died
of kidney complications, and some other writers who thought I must be
terrified kept telling me, "Don’t worry, I’m sure Patty didn’t take care
of herself as well as you do."
Well, darn it, Patty DID! And I hate the idea that someday people might
tell their diabetic friends, "Oh, Laurie didn’t take care of herself." I
don’t WANT to take the blame (assuming I’m not irresponsible, which is a
whole different thing) if and when something goes wrong.

I needed to make a few simple suggestions to everyone in the group so we can
keep it a success.
When Replying to messages in the group Please only forward the relevant part
of the message you are replying to.
It becomes very confusing to all the members when you are replying and
people forward all the copies of the previous message.
Also, please set your mail system to append the quoted message after the
response, not before. I find myself constantly paging down through pages
of replies to find the response.
A few simple steps will make the group a lot easier for everyone. Thank you
for your help.
Also if we can avoid using html text lets try to stick to plain text format
whenever it is possible.
Thank You,
