blood

Tuesday, November 30th, 2004

>wherever you live must just have different policies,
>but in northern california…I frequently donate blood

Wow, Sara, that’s impressive! And makes me glad I don’t live there <g>

no donations

>a DMers eyes, heart, and kidneys would NOT be as good
>due to the probable damage.

Well, that makes sense. I’ve always been glad they won’t accept DMer
blood, because I absolutely HATE the idea of giving blood…and it’s nice
to have a medical excuse!

>Do you have the website for those *priorities* in life?

No, but I bet I can look up UNOS. Last time I asked about donating bone
marrow (a friend was doing it) the agency said "we don’t take diabetics,"
but you’d think a diabetic’s eyes, at least, would be as good as anyone
else’s!

kidney & pancreas

>I want BOTH a kidney and a pancreas. The wait is shorter

Jan, how do you get them? Is there some kind of national clearing-house
that matches you up?

CGM

Sunday, November 28th, 2004

>The CGM (Continuous Glucose Monitor) is like wearing a 2nd pump.
>The sensor is inserted like an infusion set.

>patients need to wear them more
>then 3 days to get a better idea of what is going on.

Thanks, Vern and Frank. I’ll see if they’ll let me keep it longer…and
plan on wearing dresses with extra pockets. (And, boy, that insulinpump
website is great.)

Jan, I forwarded your "Might Be A Nurse If" to a nurse friend, who I bet
will love it!

that 5-minute bg checker

Friday, November 26th, 2004

Tonight just as I was leaving work the CDE called to ask if I’d like to
get hooked up to this machine Thursday morning. I forget what it’s
called, but it checks your blood sugar levels every five minutes for
three days, and somebody on here did that within the past couple
months…?

Anyway, for whoever’s done it, my question is: is there anything that’d
be handy to know before starting? I thought to ask the CDE "what should
I wear?" but there are probably other things I should ask her tomorrow
– so any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Laurie, wondering if it hurts about the same as a site change

You might be a nurse if . . .

Friday, November 26th, 2004

YOU MIGHT BE A NURSE IF . . .

when using a public restroom, you wash your hands with soap
for a full minute and turn off the faucets with your elbows.

when you tell a man you meet for the first time you’re a
nurse, you’re expected to laugh hysterically when he asks
you for a sponge bath, as if it was the most original and
wittiest thing you’ve ever heard.

your favorite dream is the one where you leave a mess at a
patient’s bedside and tell a doctor to clean it up.

men assume you must be great in bed because of the 9 billion
porn movies about nurses.

losing control

Friday, November 19th, 2004

>I can’t imagine anything worse than losing control.

Supposedly everyone places different emphasis on life’s four priorities:
excellence, comfort, pleasing and control. There’s a quiz that lets you
pick your top choices (if anybody wants to take it, I’ll find the
website) — but even without taking the quiz, you can sometimes guess
where your priorities lie!
