bunch of stuff

My gosh, this is a busy group today — two 25-message digests already,
and it’s not even midnight!

So many things I wanted to respond to…

>whole slew of people rooting for you

Janet, that’s been wonderful! The other day when I was dying to throw
out the pump and the horse it rode in on, I told my husband I was giving
it a month "because if I quit now, it’d be like I was letting down all
those people on the support loop." (He thought I was crazy, but he’s
not ON here.)

>Try doing a baseline bg before site change…record boluses

Joan, I’m recording the boluses and doing 9-11 bg tests a day (newbie
city!)…but I’m not clear what a "baseline" bg is? Could be I’ll find
the answer on the website, but if anybody can toss an explanation on
here I’ll probably get it quicker.

>blond, why?

Jan, I wish I knew! Maybe because your writing "voice" reminds me of an
old friend whose visual image I was putting in your place. (She writes
mystery novels, but you have the same voice…)

Speaking of which, does anybody ELSE have mental pictures of the people
on here? I’m seeing Patrick as really tall and rangy, Gail with softly
curling brown hair, Joan wearing solid colors and/or small prints, David
with dark hair and eyes, Chrissy with a ponytail…. No idea where any
of these images came from, but they’re sure vivid!

embarrassed at realizing nobody else CARES what people look like)

Laurie, I don’t know what you mean by "newbie city", but I am still
doing 9-11 bg tests a day after 21 years on
the pump, have never missed a day and am so grateful that this
technology is available now. I so well remember
the terrible old days when I had to go to hospital to have my bg
checked and I used to dream about having the
ability to test it by myself and take control of my illness. I know
that others will disagree with me, but if you
want to protect your eyes, etc almost 9-11 bg tests a day are needed
    forever, IMO. John

Not exactly. Actually, I’m short (5′8") and rangy. If anybody’s interested,
you can check me out at www.angelfire.com/nc/brushymtnband, I’m the guitar
player on the left. And yes, I’m playing a Martin, hence the screen name.
Unfortunately, the band’s dead. Fortunately, I’m not! :-)

    Laurie,

I thought maybe I fit all the jokes you’ve been hearing (LOL)

    > I’m seeing …, Gail with softly curling brown hair,

Laurie, If you want, I can send you a pic of Gail and me meeting another
DMer in Indianapolis. I have met 9 people and a dog (Gail’s helper, Glory)
from the ‘net, as well as have spoken on the phone to 4 others.

——–a baseline means that you start averaging your bg results—so that
you learn about your normal pattern - called a circadian rhythm.
what kind of glucometer are you using??? The Dex will give averages of bgs
after about 2 weeks of results.
What it means is that you know what your bg is before a site change and about
1-2 hours after. It’s better to change the site during the day, this way if
it punks out, you know about it. You should bolus a bit extra as David
suggested, My concept is that you start saturating the tissue with insulin
    and stimulate absorption.
You can get away with doing a fasting in the morning,
    2 hours after breakfast,
    before lunch,
and 2 hrs after (called a post-prandial - after you have eaten),
before and after dinner, and at bedtime. (that’s 7).
If your medical coverage pays for strips, you may be able to get your endo to
write a prescription for # 200 strips (thats 8-10 bgs per day) which has to
also be written on the prescription. If they include a diagnosis of
intensive insulin pump therapy and glucose control. You might have to call
the case manager of the insurance co. and explain, but a little "let your
fingers do the walking can work out ok"….Joan:)

Ok, Laurie - Joan does wear solids and small prints. Short, round,
    Sicilian-German-Polish-Scottish-French-Russian-Lithuanian (an American mutt),
blond (bottle), blue eyes, glasses, smile all the time, and VERY
opinionated!!! I guess we all have our preconceived notions of what out
    e-mail persona is…:).

On my insurance program I can only use so many strips in other words they
will only cover so many strips then I have to pay for them which I cant
afford. Its a bummer so I cant test that often. Chrissy

If your endo writes a scrip stating you need xx to stay in good control, the
insurance co. is NOT the prescribing factor. They should comply with your
DOCTOR’s orders. FIGHT this. Is it WRITTEN in the contract or are they just
    telling you this?

  14. Olin Ok Says:

This is one of the most short -sighted efforts of the insurance companies to
control costs. They will pay later is huge costs to treat complications.

Medicare will cover as many strips as you want, but you must have the MD certify
that you are testing at that level. In my case, I am approved for 250
strips/month, and this is fully covered by Medicare and the supplemental
    coverage.

I dont know if its written in the contract. I will call and find out. I’ve
already talked to them on this issue and they basically said too bad. Not in
those words but….I will call anyway and see if it is in writing. Thanks.

if you saw my note to Laurie, try the same thing….dont’ just take no from
the insurance company….it’s cheaper to pay for your strips for over 1 year
than 1 hospital admission….if you have ???? about it, drop me a
