tape (almost a week, yay!)

As of Monday it’ll be a week since I started pumping, and so far this is
going a LOT better than I expected — thanks to all you people! Only
one question…right now it seems like the hardest part of doing a site
change (with the Silhouette) is getting the old tape/needle off. I keep
sitting there scraping the edges of the tape, working slowly in toward
the center — anybody know any ways of making that easier?

Well Laurie, I usually use a belt sander. NO, JUST KIDDING! :-) I do use a product called Uni-Solve, made by the same company as the IV-prep.
It is made just for this situation.

Hi, I use the Silouette and I dont use any extra tape. Just put the little
circle thing on that comes w/it. It stays on just fine. Then when I change
my site I just pull it off. Do you use extra tape? Thats one of the reasons
I chose the Siloutte because I cant stand all that tape!!! Good luck.

PS: Also there really isnt a needle still in your skin just a small plastic
    tube. :)

    Laurie-

I’m sure you’ll get a million answers, but just in case… The same folks
that make Skin Preps (Smith + Nephew), make a wipe called Uni-Solve, which is
designed to remove all the goop from the tape and adhesive dressing. My
problem has always been getting them to stay on, not to get the stuff off, so
I’ve never used them. I got the dozen I have from a former member of this
group that shared hers with me as well as sending me some Skin Preps to try
when the IV Preps that had been recommended to me by my pump trainer didn’t
do anything for me. I’m sold on the Skin Preps and if the Uni-Solves work
like the Skin Preps, they might be worth a try for you. Good luck and I’m
really glad to hear that things are going better than you expected. I was
really worried that you would be so put off by the early struggles that you
would decide to go back to injections and miss out on the wonders of pumping!
    Keep it up!!

Hi Laurie: use a sticky skin prep, like smith & nephew skin prep. It makes
good contact for the adhesive, and protects your skink from the adhesive at
the same time. I usually just remove the top dressing and shower…warm
water works well as well as an alcohol prep along the edges….Joan:)

Ok, gang, let’s get an argument started. Which do you all think is better,
    IV-Prep or Skin-Prep?

take your pick Patrick: IV-prep isn’t as sticky for me, so my sets didn’t
stay in place. For patients with major skin problems we’ve used tincture of
benzoin which is almost but not quite like sticky superglue! Pain to get off
though. We normally don’t use sticky preps of this type in the hospital
unless there’s a very specific need, so it’s mostly for us non-hospitalers
(yeouch!!) There are lots of other products out there, just use the
wonderful mouse and e-mail to explore….JOAN:))))

Jh, there is a product called that which is used to make guitar picks sticky.
It’s like a rosin. Is this the same product?

I’m voting three thumbs up for Skin Prep! I bought six boxes of the IV Preps
from MiniMed when I first started having trouble with my infusion sets coming
out. I lived in San Diego at the time and did a lot of strenuous exercise
that made me sweat my tape off! I really didn’t do much better with the IV
Prep than with nothing, and even tried to put the PolySkin tape over the
whole nine yards and got nowhere. Then I got an email from a person that
used to be in this group before her employer took away their email privileges
telling me about the Skin Prep and she even sent me what she had because she
was no longer having problems at her sites. A world of difference! I am in
Ohio now and it’s much more humid, so I do occasionally have an edge here or
there that wants to peel away before I’m ready to take the thing off, but
it’s rare. So, I donated all my IV Preps to the endocrinology department at
    Kaiser and never looked back!

    easily amused ;-)

I’m in Euclid–just east of Cleveland. I’m sure you know what a culture
shock it is as well as a completely different range of weather patterns. I
find I like the slower pace in the Midwest, but everyone here smokes and
there’s only about 4 of us in the entire state that think the "e" word is
EXERCISE, not EAT!! California is a never-ending stream of fitness
enthusiasts and in Ohio that’s considered totally unheard of. Oh, well–I
don’t really like to exercise with other people so I keep my relationship
    with my treadmill a secret!

Do you miss it? I’ve not spent much time in AZ in spite of being so close by
for 30+ years. Don’t you ever wish for a few inches of snow to change the
look of the landscape for a while?
