rapids?

Saturday, July 31st, 2004

Having just botched my third insertion attempt (the Sof-Set is IN, but I
messed up the tape that’s supposed to cover it) I’m wondering if the
rapids Kathy mentioned are a better bet. ‘Like an injection" –
injections I can do! What ARE rapids, anyway?

Laurie, still on the fence about this whole venture…

Laurie changin’

Friday, July 30th, 2004

Laurie,
How you doing with the "serting"? Better I hope. Have you been a diabetic
41 years? 44 here and on the pump 19 yrs. That is why I didn’t respond to
the starting part when you ask. so long ago, I can’t remember. Of course
somedays I can’t remember my name, so that’s nothing.

>You arent in AZ by any chance?

Chrissy, I’M in Arizona! No 50th-anniversary party yet (still got 9
years to go) but it’s lovely to think there are other Arizonans on the
loop. I think there was somebody from Scottsdale on here, and I’m in
Phoenix — what about you?

officially started Monday

Hepatitis B Vaccine Linked to Onset of Diabetes

But Larger Studies Are Needed to Know if Risk Is Real

By Paula Moyer
WebMD Medical News

June 13, 2000 (San Antonio) — Faced with an ever-growing list of required
and recommended vaccinations for children — as well as occasional reports
of safety problems linked to vaccines — many parents understandably feel
confused. No doubt adding to that confusion are reports that the vaccine
against hepatitis B, a blood-borne illness that can cause liver cancer, may
actually lead to the development of type 1 diabetes in children.

Type 1 diabetes is the form where the body doesn’t make the insulin it

I have been *practicing* setting up my memorabilia display for my B.A.S.H.

made it!

This morning I printed out all the "hang in there" messages (thank you,
Peter, Scott, Jen and John!) and saved the whole thing for inspiration.
And last night after reading the first batch, I managed to do my first
site change — no WAY would I have attempted that without feeling like
"there are a bunch of insulinpumpusers out there on my side."

Thanks, everybody…you guys are as good at emotional support as the
MiniMed crew is at technical support!

sigh of reief (at least for now)

Friday, July 23rd, 2004

Wow…Frank, David, Audrey, Beth, Jan, you guys knew exactly what I
needed to hear!

It’d be nice, in a way, if I’d had more problems as motivation for
pumping — so far in 41 years I’ve had NO complications, which leaves my
only incentive a pretty generic "better flexibility, better control."
But so far I don’t have any sense of that actually happening (yeah,
right, like it’d happen in only three days!) so I need the "hang in
there" advice to keep me going. I’ve been delaying even TRYing another
infusion, but I know it won’t get easier without a lot of practice!

Meanwhile, does anybody have any suggestions for dealing with long
fingernails? I hate to give ‘em up…

Laurie, now feeling bolstered enough to go try an infusion — thanks,

well, drat — this is hard

Tuesday, July 20th, 2004

Help…I need somebody to tell me this is all worthwhile! I did the
saline start Thursday, and the other guy who was starting at the same
time said, "Wow, this is great — I came in here expecting it to be
awful, and it’s WAY better than I expected." I had exactly the opposite
experience — I expected it to be paradise (i.e. no pain at inserting
the needle, no difficulty fitting the parts together with long
fingernails) and was disappointed.

I know it’s my own fault for having set my expectations unrealistically
high, but darn it, right now I’m tempted to scrap the whole project and
just stay on shots. This ISN’T easy, this ISN’T totally pain-free, this
isn’t what I thought it was gonna be.

Can anybody who now loves the pump tell me how much they hated it at
first, or am I the only one who’s ever experienced this?
