Why Bluda Sue?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2004

When I was three years old I wanted to name my dolly something no one else
had. I sat on the curb with my chin in my chubby little hands and came up
with Bluda Sue. Sure enough, I’ve never heard anyone else have that name. My
first car was a ‘53 Chevy Bel Air - dark blue. Therefore, I named it Bluda
Sue. My pump is a MiniMed 507c - blue. Of course, I named it Bluda Sue.

My granddaughter named her dolly Cocede. lol

stretching tubing

Tuesday, June 15th, 2004

Does anyone out there in ‘net land know if when I pull Bluda Sue out of her
bag and stretch the tubing, am I doing a small bolus unwittingly?

HMO Q & A

Monday, June 14th, 2004

Q. What does HMO stand for?
A. This is actually a variation of the phrase, "Hey, Moe!"
Its roots go back to a concept pioneered by Doctor Moe Howard,
who discovered that a patient could be made to forget about
his foot if he was poked hard enough in the eyes. Modern
practice replaces the physical eye poke with hi-tech equivalents
such as voice mail and referral slips, but the result remains
the same.

Q. Do all diagnostic procedures require pre-certification?
A. No. Only those you need.

Q. I just joined a new HMO. How difficult will it be to choose
the doctor I want?
A. Just slightly more difficult than choosing your parents.

Hi,
I posted here once before and never really recieved a reply. I
am having trouble with my pump and it is getting me down. I am a
recovering, healthy, anorexic and have been insulin dependent for 15
years. Years of neglect to my body has left me with retinopathy. I
just had a victrectomy. I went on the pump a year ago and my a1c
went from 14 to 5. I used the teflon needles at first and they
kinked due to not a lot of fat on my stomach. I switched to the bent
needle…..ouch! Well, my skin is getting rough and not all my
insulin is being absorbed. Plus I was having to change the infusion
site 2 times a day because the tape came undone. Has anyone had any
luck with the new teflon shorts? I dusconnected the pump tonight and
took ultralente. I miss the pump already. I am just so
scared……my eyes can not afford unstable control.
If anyone has any uplifting stories about retinopathy getting

Hugsband’s update

Saturday, June 12th, 2004

Hugsband saw the endo today - no work so went in - and he said no DM.
Triglycerides up a bit and it was suggested he lose 10# to help and it would
also help the pancreas recover more quickly. His HbA1c was 5.4 (normal is
between 4-6) so that was good news.

A compliment I don’t believe I deserved

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004

Dear List,
I got my EPO shot and lab test today and the facility was having a health
fair. I was able to teach many of them about pumping. 8^) When I got to the
foot venue the lady said, "You are a diabetic and have a ****** pump (don’t
recall the words she used but sounded like implanted)." I had *never* seen
her before in my life (inside joke w/hugsband)." She even named my endo at
the time and described my checkbook box-sized pump at that time. We’re
talking 3 mos. short of 17 yrs ago! I asked her how she knew. She said she
took care of me in the hosp. - I was there 5-7 days to get pump - and I was
the most compliant DM patient she ever had. She even bragged on me to the
footologist who checked my sensitivity. I passed, 10 out of 10.

Frankly, I think SHE has lost HER memory. Back in ‘83 I was doing visual BGs
and that for just a year. Before that were the pee tests and since the
results were useless, I didn’t do that many. I had neuropathy of my feet and

Members Daughter

Monday, June 7th, 2004

My daughter, Ellen, is the diabetic one. She is almost three years
old. I
do have questions about the insulin pump. How old must you be to
have one?
Would she be able to "mess" with it accidentally and give herself too
much
or not enough? How is it attached? Ellen may also be a canidate for
a pace
maker in the future. Will they interfere with each other? She’s
going to
be wearing so much hardware, we could call her bionic!

I have done several fund raisers for the ADA and the JDF. This is
the type
of the thing that I enjoy doing. If you know of any fund raisers

Gail’s day

Saturday, June 5th, 2004

Gail,
Glad you are back and the heat didn’t get to you.
I know the exhaustion. I put on a Division (I’m the gov.) Int’l Speech
Contest and banquet last night at a restaurant. 34 came. It was nice if I do
say so myself. But, I got up to go to church this a.m. and was just
exhausted (I tend to heavily involve myself in my projects). Went back to
bed and slept ’til 11:30! I already have the 2 days after my BASH marked off
to rest up and do nothing. When I co-chaired a statewide conference it took
2 weeks to recover!

I’m back

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004

Hi Everyone,
Just a short note to let you know I am back from Nevada and plugged in my
PC first thing.
Let me know if I missed anything interesting.
Had a great trip, but really tired. Three days driving out to Nevada and
three days back really long, long long (did I mention long?) driving days.
Was good to see my brother and good for him.
Gotta go unpack, so catch you later. Let me hear from all of you.

Ketones ignorance

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004

I have a confession to make. I don’t know what ketones are,
what importance they play in my diabetic care, how to test
for them, and what to do if I find them. I have heard of
them, though. Would someone care to enlighten me?
I know, sad, and I’ve been dxed since 1988!
On a better note, I have found how to change time zones
rather painlessly!! I just went to the States and back in 10
days, and no ‘major’ deviations in blood sugars!! (I’m in
Germany.)
