kidneys

When my kidney function got to 35% I requested to be seen by a nephrologist.
My endo looked disappointed, but I reminded him of a patient who died that
dr. had said, "I wish he had come to me sooner." I didn’t want a neph to say
that about me. Instead of losing another 15% in 1.5 years, it took 5 years.
I’ve been pumping since 8/23/83, BUT I wish I knew more about the finer
points before 10 months ago.

    Hi Joan,
I sent you a response but it came back undeliverable so I’m trying
    this
again. I live in the southern part of south jersey. A city called
    Millville.
The endocrinologist I go to tried me on the ace inhibitor but I’m
    allergic
to it. It was called vasotec. She says that this ingredient I can’t
    handle is
used in all the ace inhibitors. I am using blood pressure medicine
    called
    dillacor.
Thanks for telling me about on-line management with Dr. Joe
    Prendergast.
I will try to get on. I guess there isn’t anything else I can take to

    try and
slow things down. All I seem to do is bang my head against a brick wall.

It seems I would just rather not eat very much just so I can avoid
    further
damage to the kidneys. I’m not on any special diet for the kidneys. I
    sometimes wish that I was.
I just can’t seem to shake this fear. Thanks for returning the
    message.
    Kathy.

Kathy I’m on Cozar which I believe is not in the ace inhibitor group
but is suppose to be just as effective. I would try and look further
into it, talk to a pharmacist or some one with knoledge of what will
be effective that does not have that ingriedent. I’m not always
going to take my doctors opinoun, they are only practicing medicine.

    Hi Kathy & George:
Give me a couple of days—I have final exams this week….promise that I
will look up whatever is available. You can log on to www.medscape.com
yourselves, and research medications through medline - type in ace inhibitors
and explore…educate yourselves. Next see a nutritionist - protein sparing
diet - low protein-high fat - might help take some of the stress off those
    kidneys.
Go back to diabeteswell.com and research ace inhibitors on their E-news
archives. Dr. Joe has been mentioning them for more than 1 year….learn
    what you can….Joan:)

    Dear David,
I am on a drug for kidneys called diltiazem- but use the generic brand
called dilacor. I was put on vasotec when this all started but was very
allergic to the vasotec. Can you tell me if using dilacor is as good for
the kidneys as vasotec. I amtaking 120 mg. once a day . The last check
on my lidneys, I was spilling in the high range numbers of 300. How bad
is this? I’m due to go next week to have the. the usual ones. Blood and
24 hour urine. tests done again on the kidneys. Would you please
e-mail me back? Thanks. Kathy Buchecker.

I am not at all familiar with Dilacor; maybe someone else on this list is.
I do have a mild problem with coughing with the Vasotec, but it is not
serious and quite manageable. I take 20 mg Vasotec once/day.

I am not sure what your 300 number refers to; I use the creatinin number as
an indicator of kidney function, and have been stable at 2000 for several
years (this is slightly above normal maximum). Occasionally this number
will drop to 1900 or so. I have this checked every three months.

    David
