Diabetes Prevention Trial - Type 1

Sunday, April 11th, 2004

Next, we will talk about those who do believe
that now is the time to prevent diabetes 1. This
is the story of the Diabetes Prevention Trial-type 1
(DPT-1). This is sponsored by the National
Institutes of Health. The study is designed to
examine whether administration of insulin to
individuals with positive antibodies, and therefore
at high risk for diabetes, can prevent or delay
onset of the disease.

You should know that over the next twelve months
investigators are seeking the final 300 participants
needed to complete the studies enrollment. As
noted this study is sponsored by the National
Institutes of Health, a national institution known

FRIENDS WITHOUT FACES
(and some who do)

We sit and we type, and we stare at our screens
We all have to wonder, what this possibly means.

With our mouse we roam, through the rooms in a maze
Looking for something or someone, as we sit in a daze.

We chat with each other, we type all our woes
Small groups we do form, and gang up on our foes.

We wait for somebody, to type out our name
We want recognition, but it is always the same.

my bone scan

Friday, April 9th, 2004

Good news!! My bone scan turned out *normal.* However, if *normal* means
sleeping in my clothes 4 nights because I couldn’t lift my legs high enough
to get my socks or slacks off, or severe pains just breathing - I don’t like
it. Intend to get the lead test Monday with my quarterly blood draw. I do
think that mug was the cause.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jennifer Sivils was a healthy mother of three when
suddenly she got a mysterious stomach disorder that literally was
starving her to death. She simply could not hold down any food and
her weight dropped from 157 pounds to 98.

Severe gastroparesis left her stomach unable to churn properly to
move food down the digestive tract. Intravenous nutrition kept her
alive.
But then she got an experimental pacemaker-like device that zapped

lead update

Wednesday, April 7th, 2004

A couple weeks ago I asked about the possibility of lead in my
turquoise-interior ceramic mug. Today I found a lead testing kit and read
the instructions before buying it. It said to wipe the surface with their
special cloth and send it to their lab for $10. It said to look for chalky
stuff. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS. I’m having my quarterly blood test done
Monday and will request tomorrow that be added to the list. I know lead can
also damage kidneys - could that have cause my intense pain that sent me to
the ER and didn’t let me raise my legs far enough to remove my socks or
slacks so I had to sleep in my clothes 3-4 nights? What have I done to
myself?

Jan, when he sent this I had heard nothing about it and thought maybe it
was South Africa hype. But later I was reading the CBS news and they have
an article on it. Wouldn’t it be great.

Cape bushwillow tree cures cancer (March 31, 2000)

The Daily Mail & Guardian reports that the bark from the Cape
bushwillow tree, which is indigenous to the Eastern Cape, might be the
cure for cancer the whole world has been waiting for.

The report states that a United States researcher in 1987 isolated
small organic molecules called combretastatins from the bark of the
Cape bushwillow tree. Now, after more than 10 years of research,
development and trials, this work has culminated in the
combretastatins being transformed into a cancer-busting drug called
