Diabetes Prevention Trial - Type 1

Next, we will talk about those who do believe
that now is the time to prevent diabetes 1. This
is the story of the Diabetes Prevention Trial-type 1
(DPT-1). This is sponsored by the National
Institutes of Health. The study is designed to
examine whether administration of insulin to
individuals with positive antibodies, and therefore
at high risk for diabetes, can prevent or delay
onset of the disease.

You should know that over the next twelve months
investigators are seeking the final 300 participants
needed to complete the studies enrollment. As
noted this study is sponsored by the National
Institutes of Health, a national institution known

for only doing the most ethical research.

The ethical difficulties come from the fact that
about 300,000 people will need to be screened
to get the 300 they’re looking for. Should that
many people be subjected to blood draws to
look for this small number of people?

My personal feeling is, heck yes. If I was a
family member of someone with type 1 diabetes
I would be just delighted to know that I was not
eligible for the study because I did not have the
antibodies. If I was eligible, I would like to carefully
weigh the benefits that I might get from the research
and maybe even I wouldn’t get diabetes!? You can’t
buy this testing anywhere else on earth.
