know about lead poisoning?

Does anyone know anything about lead poisoning? I have had severe back pains
since 3/23, mainly starting in the muscle above my left hip. My head/neck
are stiff, too. Went to ER Sunday where I was given pain pills and advised
to see dr. for exercises (!!!). Had Xrays Monday and saw endo Tuesday. He’s
ordered a bone scan for today (3/30). It may be a pinched sciatic nerve.

Then I got to thinking, a friend told me about a thing she has that she
freezes; she pours cold milk in it and drinks delicious icy-cold milk. I
have a ceramic mug I’ve been putting in the freezer and drinking milk from
it. It is great. I always wash/rinse it and put it back. When I get it out
of the freezer, it is always coated a funny white inside and my hugsband
accuses me of not cleaning it. Then he did it for me because of my pain –
it turned the exact same pattern of white after HIS expert cleaning.

Now I’m wondering, am I leeching lead and drinking it? Would it cause my

back pain? Anyone have any experience with something similar?

Jan, Rule of thumb in ceramics….the darker the color the more lead in the
color.. this goes for any ceramic/glass fired products including tempered
    glass products like PYREX etc.

    FP,
so do you think the white coating after freezing is lead seeping through
    cracks?

    Jan,
Don’t really know that much about lead poisoning. When I worked at the
Health Dept. we tested alot of children.
I would not think there would be lead in the ceramic (but don’t know).
Paint has lead, but if there is paint of a mug I would think they would use
lead free paint. As far and the white coating, is it like the rootbeer mugs
when they are frozen. They have a frost on them and they are glass.

    Gail,
It is milk-white substance that I really can’t scrape off and it is in a
peculiar pattern. I remember once about a family who had a pitcher that
orange juice was served in every a.m. The whole family got lead poisoning
because the acid in the juice leeched it out of the ceramic. Whatever, I’m
not going to do that anymore 8^( I’m going to use a clear class rootbeer
mug. Is that okay, Footprint? That icy milk is delicious. Maybe it won’t be
if there’s no lead in it. 8^)

    Jan: Hi, Joan:)
get to the doctor and let him do a lead level– simple blood test we do for
    kids..
Lead poisoning can affect adults as well as kids and there are mugs and
dishes made down in Mexico that can have elemental lead as a base for white
glazes…advise you use it for decoration only and invest in a Corel
ceramic/glass/whatever. If you lead level is elevated, you would have to be
started on medication to chelate the lead out…if you don’t can get
    permanent neurological damage.
Next - get a bone density test done…we’re not getting on, at least not yet,
but it’s good to know your baseline….Later, Joan:)

    Joan,
Had the bone scan done today. I just thought about the mug thing after
seeing the *white* stuff after it’s frozen - several days now. I looove that
    mug!

It could very well be leaching from the mug, so get a plastic something…at
least you know its safe and you can still enjoy the frozen moo. Me, can’t,
    allergies..:( Joan:)

    Joan,
I’ve been able to stand up and sit down today without thinking about. Still
have a low level of pain. Would not drinking out of that mug work that
    quickly?

No Jan, not necessarily, unless there’s something else leaching out of the
mug. I would suggest taking it to the lab and having the dried stuff
analyzed just to be on the safe side. Are you eating something not usual to
your diet? do a dietary recall, maybe there is another reason for your
    symptoms…I’d still check it out…Joan:)
