bg’s and hot tubs

Sunday, January 18th, 2004

Another pumpers list recently had some stuff about the effect of hot
tubs on bg’s, and several reported on seeing bg’s drop when using a hot
tub, very much like the effect of exercise. somehow this does not make
much sense to me; does anyone on this list have any experience with
this? I have not noticed any effect from the hot tub I use; typically
for 20 minutes or so at 104 degrees F.

JDF funds

Saturday, January 17th, 2004

I just gave Leeza my daily dozen-plus kisses.
JDF is guaranteed to receive $10,000 but could receive a
$25,000 donation if Leeza Gibbons receives the most "smooches" during the
14-day period (until 2/14/00).

Right now Leeza is #2. We don’t like #2 and we won the $50,000 donation on
that accenthealth fundraiser.

Thanks,
Jan

slowww mail - off Topic

Tuesday, January 13th, 2004

I called my ISP to complain about mail not getting through. Heard
an interesting tale:

It seems as though some *hackers* went through the entire internet system
about 1/10/00 and put a virus in many servers to not recognize mail
delivery. (This functionally-illiterate PC user is trying my best to say
this the way I was told, but I’m probably getting confused.) The technician
said my
server was one of the *attacked* and they have reset their system. BUT, we
will continue to have problems until ALL servers reset their systems.
Therefore subscribers need to complain to their servers to get them to reset
their ISNs or NSNs (??) to recognize mail from other servers.
Attempts will be made for 5 days, then the mail will return to sender.

If anyone is seeing (or *not* seeing) freaky things, this is probably the

The Sugarless Mind

Monday, January 12th, 2004

This came from a Diabetes Newsletter:

The Sugarless Mind

One afternoon while sitting at my computer I noticed that my
program was not processing my keystrokes at its usual pace. Soon after I
noticed this, the screen started to flicker and suddenly went blank. My
computer still had all its vital parts, but without electricity it was
unable to process any information. As I sat there at my desk I started to
compare this situation to that of a hypoglycemic episode. When our blood
sugar starts to dip (50 to 80 mg/dl and less), we soon find ourselves not
thinking as clearly, just as my computer screeched to a halt without
electricity. If we continue on this downward spiral without correcting our
sugar level, we become just like my computer. Sure we will still have a
brain and all the other useful parts of our bodies, but without GLUCOSE,

DBI

Sunday, January 11th, 2004

Gail,
Since you were 5 and I was 11.5 at DX, what was the reason they put you on
DBI since it was a BG-lowering chemical for Type 2’s? Mine was because being
pg in ‘60-’62 they thought the increased insulin requirements would harm the
babies so added DBI. I stayed with that combo of DBI, NPH and Regular for 16
years.

Captopril

Saturday, January 10th, 2004

Gail,
Your reply is interesting. That neph was quite upset because Captopril
*helped* NINETY-FIVE % of the people!! I don’t think he considered room for
ANYONE to have an adverse reaction. You are about the 5th person I’ve come
across since that time who cannot take it. It sounds pretty common to me. I
took DBI (the first BG-lowering pill) for about 16 years; Seldane for 20
years; Cyclamates for 16 years; Dyazide for 16 years. All taken off the
market because they were *bad*. I’m not going to die from diabetes - it will
be from what I take to *help* me. PTL when I was pg and 8 mos. of a.m.
sickness (’60-’61) I was NOT given Thalidomide!!!

You mentioned your cough to your dr. and in about 1 day it stopped. When I
stopped on Thurs. and saw him the following Mon., I told him I was soooo
much better. He said, "NO your NOT. You just THINK you are!" However, he is
someone’s son who is very proud of their son the doctor.

KPTX news

Wednesday, January 7th, 2004

Les,

My kidneys have been failing for some time; was told 8/94 that I had 2-6
years to need a tx. Function is now at 23% - dialysis begins at 15%. I DO
NOT want to go on dialysis - but who has a choice when it’s a life/death
situation? I’m on a tx e-list and some there had it done w/o dialysis. Some
had dialysis for several years. One recently died never receiving the tx.
some have had K - P separately, some just one of them, and some together.
Together is better from the same cadaver. That’s the sad part, someone has
to die so I may live.

With my decreasing deterioration (almost 50 yrs of DM) it is inevitable at
this point that a tx would be necessary. My nephrologist had no hesitation
in proceding. The *list members* do not recommend Chicago. I think I could
maneuver around Indy better. BUT, a recent tx-er within 45 miles of me

HbA1c - HGbA1c

Wednesday, January 7th, 2004

Someone told me there is a difference in the two tests in the subject line.
I thought one had to do with protein-binding in the blood due to high blood
glucose.

Also, is it an average = a 50 reading and a 250 reading would be 150?
