thanks from newcomer

Wow, what a great loop! I feel really lucky having stumbled onto
EXACTLY the right bunch of people — and it’s a relief to hear that
pumps have gotten better since 1985.

I’ll probably have a bunch more questions before I go see the diabetes
educator March 21 — I’m hoping she’ll recommend a pump and I won’t have
to request it…but maybe the insurance will pay even if it’s my own
request. Somebody mentioned cars, and this DOES feel like setting out
to buy a new car (or maybe a computer) — how the heck do you find the
best one?

What brands do you all like, and why?

here with information to share

caught in this lap

Friday, January 30th, 2004

Hi, Laurie,
I started pumping 8/23/83 with a CPI the size of a checkbook box. I got it
because 6 weeks later it was upgraded to a CPI Betatron 9200 the size of a
king-size pack of cigs. That lasted me 9 years until CPI quit making pumps
and I could no longer get supplies. I then went to a MiniMed 506. That died
after 6 years. I now have a MiniMed 507c - Blue - renamed Bluda Sue. It is
the size of 7/8" stack of business cards.

Gail Darling may chime in here, too. She has been pumping over 18 years. I
would not (nor have ever desired) to go back to daily injections — even
though I took ONE shot (NPH/R) a day for 30 years, then TWO a day for three
years. The freedom to sleep in on Saturday mornings (for me, ANY a.m.), have
late Sunday noon dinner because we’re not out of church at 12:00 to have
eating already in progress are some of the beauties of the pump.

hello from newcomer

Thursday, January 29th, 2004

Hi, I just saw this group on onelist and was intrigued — a few days ago
my doctor said he wanted to put me on 3 shots a day instead of 2, and
now I’m wondering whether a pump might be better.

I’m 44, diabetic since age 3, and used a pump while I was pregnant 15
years ago. At the time it was a big pain — the boluses hurt, inserting
the needle hurt — and as soon as I had my baby it was goodbye, pump!

But have things gotten better in 15 years? Can anybody offer some
suggestions? Thanks!

Animascorp

Re: From Michael At Insulin Pumper. Org.

I’ve just received the press release from Animas about their new pump
the R-1000. Now it’s official, the pump has been approved for use in
the US. The highlights of the 7 page press release are:.

Animas received 501(k) clearance from the FDA to market the R1000
insulin pump on February 10, 2000. The pump will use infusion sets
manufactured by Maersk and are interchangeable with the
Disetronic/MiniMed infusion sets.

They expect approval in the EU countries in late 2000.

They have entered a distribution agreement with Insulin Infusion
Specialities to augment their direct sales force of 32 people.

Miss America 1999

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

I often ask people if they know what Miss America (1999) and I have in
common? One replied, "You both have two legs?" Nooooo, a MiniMed insulin
pump. Nicole Johnson is on the 700 Club today. I know it is on many
different TV stations throughout the day. If you are still able to get it,
she is interviewed by another former Miss America (Terry Meeusen [?]) within
the first half hour. She shows a glimpse of her pump, too.

Jan - not to be confused with Nicole (60 y/o, T-1 11/5/50, pmpg 8/23/83)

Click 4 A Cure Campaign!

Nope not a scam. I am a Type 1. I have been a diabetic for 23 years.
Use MDI, humalog and carb count. HGU so many many BG checks per day.

I’m getting tired of this disease. The Internet is a vast opportunity
of many users that could help if they would. The links (5) on the
page only take 5 or 10 mins each day to visit. Lets get the word out
and Click 4 A Cure!

JDF and Islet Sheet medical will be the benefactors of this campaign.

We didn’t kiss-up enough

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

I received the following message from American Greetings today. Apparently
we didn’t kiss Leeza Gibbons enough and the clearwater project won the
$25,000. JDF did, however, receive $10,000 for Juvenile Diabetes research.
Thanks for your efforts.

Thanks For Making Celebrity Smooch A HUGE Success!
- Thanks to all of you who puckered up and gave a virtual smooch to your
favorite celebrity. With your help, we raised $115,000 for 10 great
charities and generated a lot of smooches for Valentine’s Day.
- Which celebrity was the most smoochable? In spite of some tough
competition from Daisy Fuentes and Leeza Gibbons, the winner of Celebrity
Smooch was Jewel. Congratulations to Jewel and her charity, Higher Ground
for Humanity, Clearwater Project. They will receive a donation of $25,000
from AmericanGreetings.com.

Type 2 meds

Monday, January 26th, 2004

I was told that the diabetes pills for Type 2s eventually eat the pancreas
causing the demand for insulin injections. Is this common knowledge and I
missed it?
