we are doing ok with it it sure is easier than giving injections all the time
most of her bs are in the target range unless 1) she forgot to bolus a food
item or meal or 2) something takes more insulin than the ratio prescribed
like pizza and lasts longer in her system requiring several boluses to bring
it down and then she crashes
have had an occ low and not know why i.e. not related to a bolus recently
she prefers the rapids which she inserts herself
and over the past month more than half of her bs are in the target range and
she has only been pumping 16 days target range 80-180 although sometimes we
end up checking bs when they are up to see if they have come down enough yet
so it is not just premeal bs and fasting bs and hs bs those are even better.
i haven’t adjusted her basal rate or her 1 unit to 15 carbs ratio at all but
we are counting her snacks and bolusing for those even though the endo said
we shouldn’t have too it goes too high without.
and she has sure put her insulin to the test lately like sundaes; and a lunch

at mcdonalds- big mac, fries, strawberry-banana milkshake and chicken nuggets
even though she got 10 units at lunch it seems the milkshake or something
stuck with her a long time and took about 8 more units over a period of time.
also any time her bs gets near 230 or so she gets her stomach ache back that
had been mostly gone for 1 1/2 yrs. so when she starts complaining of it
hurting i say what is your bs and have you bolused it.
we her bs is low she falls asleep and doesn’t even say anything. so we have
to keep a careful eye on her in that respect.
thanks for asking about us. i would only trade the pump for a cure.

    Hi Kathy & Alisha:
try using the temporary bolus feature on the pump when Alisha is dosing on
those high fat items….You can ask for the dietary sheets from Mc Donalds,
Wendys, and there are pamphlets out there for most items in the fast food
chains so that you have a better idea on how prolonged a time its going to
take for her to metabolize the food just by the contents. Those shakes are
very high in fat and carbohydrates which is why it takes longer to use. It’s
also better to underdose when she isn’t sure than to over bolus. Humalog
usually is on board for about an hour, but it also depends on our ability to
use it effectively. So, when covering for highs, underdose…use smaller
amounts and allow time for the total amount which includes the basal plus
bolus to work. You should be able to avoid those super lows…..Joan :)
