Jan I have to agree with Joan. A lot of people think doctors are Gods but
they are far from infalable. I myself request all my blood test results from
my doctor so I can look them over. When the doctor says the test were
good... I want to see how good. They are your test and you have every right
to see a copy of the results. I had a situation where I was spilling blood
in my urine and the doctor never spotted it. When I looked over the test it
said a large amount.. so I looked back on previous test and found I had been
spilling a small to moderate amount of blood in my urine for the last 3
times I went for blood work. To make a long story short I had to go for a
cystascope to find out why I was spilling blood. Thank God it was nothing
but if I would not have had my test the doctor would have never noticed it.
Sometimes these doctors do not have enough time to examine, diagnose and
treat each person to the best of there ability. When the doctor said to you
friend her sugar was a little high.. did he tell her how high. Did he follow
with any other test.. Hga1c... was the test done on a fast for at least 8
<!--more-->
hours?
I also feel badly for you because you are trying to be a good friend but the
messenger always gets hurt. I know how that goes.

Ok Jan:
"normally", most internists rely on the pharmaceutical reps' info for patient
management. It would be a good idea for your friend to have an endocrine
consult to see if she is truly diabetic or whether it was a transient
result...maybe she had a major soda - coke can do it before her visit, or she
may be truly carbohydrate intolerant....so tell her to humor you because you
care. That a good patient is one who questions and investigates so that she
can have the absolutely best care there is, etc.
no, you are not overreacting, problem is that most people believe that
doctors are infallible until they screw up!! so tell her your nurse friend
who is a "diabetes educator" we'll fib...suggested it would be in her best
interest....glucophage can cause some major liver problems!!! Joan :)
