possible

Monday, August 25th, 2003

Joan,
I got the following clip from another list. Is this possible (the insulin
dosages)??
Jan

The great news is I’ve worked for a large health insurance company for 15
years, and they very much want me to stay, to the point of hooking up what
I need off the network at work and putting here on my computer at home. I
have fun at work and refuse to give up. Right now my basal rate is 10
units an hour, with boluses of 20 pre-meal, and injections of 50 units of
70/30 twice daily. What haven’t I tried ?

Iron Q

Sunday, August 24th, 2003

Joan,
On this Cipro thing. I also take 300 mgs Nifrex iron a day. How can I adjust the
timing so I can have milk for breakfast (will take a calcium pill with), then at
what point do I work my iron in which requires no dairy products for 4 hrs near
it!! I’m frustrated. Sure hate to go 10 days w/o the iron. I’m tired enough as
it is. :) Jan

Second opinions???

Thursday, August 21st, 2003

We are currently trying to get my son on an insulin pump. My husbands
insurance said they will not cover it unless we gget a second opinion. I
was wondering if anyone out there had to go through this nightmare too?
My sons readings are staying too high. He now requires 4 shots a day as
compared to 2 when he left the hospital. at 10:30am he takes a reading at
school and gets his shot usually then, and then they take another reading at
noon before he eats lunch. and just now at 3pm after school he was 353,
after not eating snacks and all he had for lunch was green peas and a
chicken sandwich.
He is now using humulin R and N. The doctor today put him on Humulog for
his slide scale shots. Has anyone else been on two different (types) of
insulin. Are there any difficulties that I should know about, anything
particular to look for.
I would reeally appreciate any and all help in this situation.
My sons first doctor called the period right after he got out of the

Cipro Q

Thursday, August 21st, 2003

Has anyone used Cipro? That’s an antibiotic I’m on right now. Got 250mg (8)
last Friday. The instructions were: If you are taking an antacid, sucralfate,
bismuth subsalicylate or products containing calcium, iron or zinc, do not take
them within 4 hours before or 2 hours after the dose of this medicine.
Pharmacist said to be sure to take them with food because I might be dizzy.
I got 20 500mg tabs yesterday at a diff. pharmacy and the instructions
say: Best taken 2 hours after a meal. Avoid antacids, iron, zinc, within 6 hours
of a dose. This Pharmacist said to take them on an empty stomach with water.
Side effects: nausea, diarrhea, sun sensitivity, dizziness, headache. WOW! It
says nothing about calcium so I asked. He said not to take calcium (milk and
cheese too) for an hour. HOW CONTRADICTORY to the first dosage/instructions.
And, why didn’t it say no calcium on these instructions?
What has someone else gone through with this?

Y2K fix

Wednesday, August 20th, 2003

I’ve been taking a computer course at the "Y" and learned that every single
installation of Windows worldwide is defaulted to fail Y2K rollover. Here is how
to fix it yourself:

Double click on "My Computer."
Double click on "Control Panel."
Double click on "regional Settings" icon.
Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page.

Where it says, "Short Date Sample" look and see if it shows a "two-digit" year.
Of course it does.
That’s the default setting for Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT.

This date RIGHT HERE is the date that feeds application software and WILL NOT
rollover in the year 2000. It will roll over to 00.

Nope, I’m gonna sit and lurk awhile. I learn best that way. Also, it
helps me avoid putting my foot in my mouth.

static electricity

Tuesday, August 12th, 2003

I don’t recall who suggested this, but have been doing it quite some time
now, but in northern Indiana it gets quite dry in the wintertime. Walking
across nylon carpets, sliding into car seats, etc. builds up static
electricity and that *charges* the pump. To help counteract this, I put a
third of a used fabric softener sheet into each of my pump *pockets.* It
seems to help.

I use colored coin purses/cigarette cases that zip and are pump size, put a
key ring in the pull and swing that from my belt. I am color-coordinated
that way. Most people thing it’s my money in a swinging *fanny pack.*
They have no idea that my *life* is in there. I have about 50 of these
bags — ranging from $1-$10.
