Pump supply costs

Wednesday, July 16th, 2003

I have a Minimed 507C pump and really love it. I called the Minimed Pharmacy for
a renewal set of supplies (3 months worth). We talked about the retail price and
the cost to me after my insurance payments. These figures were VERY surprising
to me. The cost of QR sets, IV3000s, batteries, etc. for 3 months is about $
700. After insurance payments, I will owe just under $ 150. So, although the
amount covered is fairly good, still the costs for everyone seem extremely high.
When the pump costs about $ 5K, it seems a lot to spend about $ 3K/year for
supplies.

Does anyone have these same thoughts or any alternatives? Do other companies
sell QR type supplies? Are they just as reliable as Minimed’s? Thanks for the
collective wisdom of everyone!

T-1 & 2 graph & FP’s no boluses)

Monday, July 14th, 2003

I have NOT had formal education past high school (class of ‘57) except for 2
non-fiction writing classes one semester at a local liberal arts college. BUT,
the difference in Type I and Type II diabetes was explained to me by my endo was
with the graph I’m going to attempt to make.

On a non-diabetic (I refuse to call them normal people because sometimes I think
I’m more normal than they are) the BG runs according to the following lines with
snacks and meals indicated (it’s much easier w/pen & paper face to face):
____
__ _ ___ _ / \
- - -/br\- - -/s\ - - -/ Lu.\ - - -/s\ - - -/ Dnr. \ - - -^- -

A Type 2 diabetic still produces insulin, however it is not quite enough and is
late: Low & Slow. If we were sitting together, I would draw a line a little
underneath the graph and offset it.

Thought of the Day / Diabetes Research

Sunday, July 13th, 2003

—————————————————————————-

Good Morning Friends,

Tomorrow in this spot you’ll find a few words about our first sponsor. We
have made arrangements for New South Communications to make a donation to JDF.
This donation is contingent upon the P-A-D Thoughts circulation. In other
words, the more people who see the sponsor’s name and message the more JDF and
diabetes research will benefit. So I urge you, contact anyone and everyone you
know whose lives have been touched by diabetes and have them subscribe. Every
time someone receives our P-A-D Thoughts of the Day from our server, our sponsor
makes a contribution to diabetes research. It can’t be any easier.

MiniMed had no information on National Diabetes Awareness Month so I
e-mailed them. I have heard very little about it in the media so far this
month.

No Bolus’s

Tuesday, July 8th, 2003

Hi gang , I’m restleing with a situation and hope y’all can help. Here it is.
Lately I’ve encountered a situation that appears like my pump hasn’t recorded
some of the boluses. This is because I don’t always record them at the time I
simply bring ‘em up and record ‘em later. so I noticed a couple of times no
bolus……
and yet when I looked at the next b/g test…it’s normal!! Say at lunch.

Doesn’t make sense does it?

So, to test the system I purposely did not bolus to see what would happen and
guess what? next b/g normal….. how do yak figure??

I repeated this a couple of different days….same result.

So it would appear I’ve been bolusing unnecessarily, even tho, no reactions have

49th Anniversary

Monday, July 7th, 2003

(I have purposely sent this about noon EST. However, the ISP has been very slow
lately so don’t know when it will arrive)

Today is kind of an emotional one for me. I had already missed a lot of school
for not feeling well, VERY thirsty, frequent urination, rapid loss of weight,
and very hungry. I remember trick-or-treating in 1950 with my friend Judy; I was
so sick I laid on a lawn because I couldn’t go up to the house to beg for candy
(candy was not the cause for my troubles). The next day I was taken for my
first-ever dr. visit. I was 11 years old. Dx: Run down. Need tonsils out. No
Way! Mom didn’t want me to get hurt. (Was given some pills. Very hard to swallow
so I cried and didn’t have to take them.)

Next day saw another doctor. Dx: Just a kid complaining. Vitamin shot
(first-ever injection). A bottle of (liquid back then) terrible-tasting vitamins
was prescribed. I just cried real hard and didn’t have to take it.

Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert Kicks-Off National Diabetes Awareness Month

Washington, D.C.-November 1, 1999-Today, Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the U.S.
House of Representatives kicked off National Diabetes Awareness Month with a new
public service announcement for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International
(JDF). Diabetes affects 16 million Americans and accounts for more than $105
billion in annual U.S. health-care costs. The 30-second television PSA is a
bipartisan spot featuring the Speaker and children with diabetes representing
all ethnic groups.

"During November, National Diabetes Awareness Month, Republicans and Democrats
are united in urging you to know the warning signs of this deadly disease which
kills one American every three minutes," said Speaker Hastert. "I’m pleased to
join the JDF in the fight to find a cure for a disease that affects young and
old alike. People with diabetes deserve more to look forward to than a lifetime
