Swimming
Hi, I am another new pumper (3 weeks) and love it! This weekend I was
swimming and the cannula became bent (I use the sof-set) and stopped the
insulin flow. Has anyone had any experience swimming with the pump? What have
you done to prevent anything like this from happening?
Thanks!

Andrea, I haven’t had the guts to try swimming yet. Did the set stay on??

Footprints & all:
I have been swimming 3 times. 2 times it was fine but another time the set
got bent. I think it may have been because I was swimming wiht little kids
and pulling them around and such which was kind of rough. Other than that,
there have been no problems swimming. Don’t let them pump stop you!

i go swimming everyday. i find that if you use the tape that comes w/the
setup…it comes out because of the hole in the tape. so my mom got me a
box of tape…its the same tape that comes w/the set up but it doesn’t have
a hole in it. also, i change the tape everytime i go swimming just to make
sure it doesn’t get wet. mine came out a lot though but luckily i caught it
before my sugar went too high. sometimes in school, the cannula would come
out and i wouldn’t know it and my sugar would go over 600. now that is not
fun. good luck w/swimming.

Hi Andrea:
make sure you use additional dressing to keep the cannula in place. My
grandson is pretty rowdy, so if it can stand up against him, it should work
for swimming too. Luck, Joan:)

My experience suggests that the best deal is to remove the pump totally (use the
QR) and swim without it. If you are under good control, the consequences are
minimal. Just be sure what your initial BG is, and then take another after the
exercise. Simple, effective, and since exercise usually requires minimal basal
stuff anyway, it works fine for me.

The QR lets you disconnect the thing; just be sure the set is in place with
tape while you swim….no loss at all…

Hi gang:
Look for an IV type dressing that is more water proof like tegaderm, an extra
dressing when you know you’re going swimming is a good idea. I like the QRs
because they can be disconnected and reconnected real easy and since I’m up &
down and in and out all the time, I always make sure a new cannula is well
secured, even for everyday wear & tear. Those of us that can use Tenders or
Silhouettes, those are easy too. just takes a little plan ahead, enjoy the
swim! Joan:)
