Pampered Chef

July 31st, 2007

So here is the next fundraiser that TEAM ELLEN Charities, Inc. is
doing to help find a cure for diabetes. This one is really easy–you
don’t have to walk a couple of miles, you don’t have to pledge money
for me to walk a couple of miles and best of all, you don’t even have
to see me! All you do is look at the Pampered Chef web site or
catalog and choose the new cookware that you need, the apple
peeler/corer/slicer for your Great Aunt Ida, or new barbeque utensils
for the gourmet griller in your family. Any item in the Pampered
Chef catalog would make a great gift for friends, family or
yourself! Oh yeah… you’re also helping us find a cure for diabetes
because 30% of all sales will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation!! Happy shopping!!

bg meters/Consumer Reports

July 30th, 2007

This is interesting — a guy in my office who knows I’m diabetic brought
in his copy of Consumer Reports because he thought I’d like to read their
article on diabetes care.

Most of it was stuff we all know, but they had a good chart on eleven
different blood glucose meters. Consistency means giving similar
readings on successive tests of the same sample; accuracy means how
closely the readings agreed with standard lab results. Here’s how they
ranked (in order):

1. ONE TOUCH ULTRA
Ease of use and features: excellent
Consistency: very good
Accuracy: very good
Features: alternate-site testing, large memory, displays averages,

for Christine

July 28th, 2007

>I have had Type 1 diabetes for 35 years
>and I am told I have done very well.

Christine, that was my experience when I started pumping last year — and
I wish I’d known before starting that "doing very well" can be a BAD
thing when it comes to starting a new regimen. (If I’d known, it
wouldn’t have been bad!)

The problem was that all the training and literature emphasize how much
better you’ll feel when you’ve got the improved control pumping gives
you. That didn’t happen for me — I already felt fine — and the lack of
any immediate payoff made it more frustrating to put up with the natural
learning curve of any new venture.

As long as you don’t go in expecting that pumping will give you a whole

hi all

July 24th, 2007

Hello everyone. Been out of the loop for a while…some small
computer issues. I haven’t yet had a chance to catch up on the
posts, but will be working on it.

I did a continuous glucose monitor last week. (actually it took 3
tries to get it to work) I should be getting the feedback in the
next couple of days.

If anyone has any tips re: surviving a root canal please send them!
I am having my first of two tomorrow afternoon. My biggest concern
is what kind of anesthesia to use because of my many health issues.
I’ll be checking with my pharmacist about Halcion when I pick up my
pre-med antibiotic tomorrow morning. I expect there may be a major
impact on the short-term blood sugars, but don’t know exactly which
way it will go…

Unexplained highs

July 22nd, 2007

Hello. I am writing to ask if any of you have experience unexplained
highs with the pump. Sometimes I experience them, and I often wonder
if it has to do with the positioning and/or depth of the infusion set.
I find that the side of my stomach is worse in this sense than the
front of my stomach. I am not overweight; I am a 32-year-old male with
an average build. I currently use the Siloutte sets, but I’ve wondered
if the other sets which go in at a 90-degree angle actually give more
consistent results. Would this be the case with heavier-set
individuals, too? I appreciate your advice and comments. Thanks, –
Garrett

I’ve been lurking!

July 21st, 2007

Hi All

I have been lurking since March of this year. I have had Type 1
diabetes for 35 years and I am told I have done very well. But, I
want to do better. When I heard about the insulin pump I asked my
internal medicine doctor if I would be a good candidate. Since then,
March 2001, I have been waiting to hear if I have been approved. I
am soooooo ready. I have done the preliminaries; met with a pump
trainer, found an endo, and met with a nutritionist.

I finally heard from Mini Med last week. They told me when they get
the prescription from my endo the wait should only be 4 to 6 weeks.

After lurking all summer, I feel I can do this. I did read Pumping
Insulin by John Walsh. That really explained a lot.
